Alright guys lemme break it down.

I love watching the starcraft matches on youtube and what not. Love watching the MLG starcraft tourney. Love me some RTS games in general.

But my comp is wack old and won't run Starcraft with out a new graphics card. Now i'm not overly against getting a new card just for SC2 but what i need to know from my fam here at TLN is this.

Is it worth buying? Is this a game that the pros just make look so easy but when i get it and start playing online i'll get raped so much it won't even be fun? Or is the game just as sick awesome as everyone makes it seem?

Also what kinda ability do we have in the community here? Sick skill levels that won't play with an avg joe like myself? Lol. Or peeps willing to get thier game on? I know i'd be starting way behind in strategy and everything since the game has been out for awhile and people are already developed, but you never know.

Talk to me TLN!

It's worth it. The SC2 community is one of the best out there. You won't run across many idiots online. Most people are always willing to help you out. There are also many of us here and in other forums. The game is what you make it. It can be chill and laid back. Or you can get super competitive about it. There are great people out there willing to help anyone new to they game. The basics of the game is very easy to learn. Then you slowly pick up some of the more advance details on the game and then make your own playing styles.

When you go online it won't throw you against the top players. You will almost always be matched up with people or your skill level. It's a fun game you can lose hours to if it's your thing. Also if you get into it just ask some of us around here for help. There are a lot of us just on TLN alone.

Yeah the SC2 community is pretty cool, there are always people willing to help with your gameplay and everything. But there are the douches of the community, but overall is a very nice and cool community. Definantly worth getting if you are into RTS games, it starts you off in low level brackets and builds you up with how well you play and what not, Defiantly hit me up on battle net, im always willing to play, my account should be Gopher

The game is fun to play but if you want to get good at it it's gonna take time. Although you did say you were into the RTS scene. I just got the game recently and I'm having trouble going from pure FPS to an RTS game. RTS's are a hell of a lot harder in my opinion.

MLG has actually been having strategy stuff on it, the members here can help. Plus many forums like team liquid and then of course the all powerful Day[9].

You have to like RTS games to enjoy this, but since you stated you do, this happens to be the best RTS game in the world.

Starcraft is absolutely amazing to watch, If you want to be inspired either tune into the GSL every day at 9am(GMT)
www.gomtv.net
or watch some of the old Dreamhack broadcasts.

This is without doubt my favourite SC2 game ever!

Now some info for you, Starcraft can be played at a stupidly low GFX rate, Yes it does look amazing on Ultra settings, but you can make it look almost similar to the 10 year old Brood War. Blizzard have always said they want as many people to be able to play their games no matter the computer. These are some screenshots comparing GFX settings.

Now onto the difficulty, i need to emphasis this. You will get your arse handed to you for the first couple of weeks untill you learn about strats, counters and proper strats. play through the single player campaign, i would suggest starting it on Hard difficulty, at that level you will start to learn the correct skills and APM in order to play online with some decent standard.

Hope that helps, its always good to get new people into the amazing game that is Sc2

So the more i try to dive into this SC2 world the more lost i am cuz it just seems so huge!

Is there a single online set of ranking? I.E. Halo you always/only go to xbox live to rank/play. But i hear mention of being ranked on diff servers and stuff? How does that all work?

Yeah i started off as an RTS player, halo got me to switch to FPS which was a bear! But now that i'm "retired" from halo i feel the pull back to my roots! lol

Plus many forums like team liquid and then of course the all powerful Day[9].

Love watching Day9! Literally watching him while i type this. Whats the deal with all the teams? I see things like root gamers, EG, liquid, etc. I'm assuming this is like pro teams in MLG halo? Or is this something much bigger, more official?

And aran! Knew you'd be replying, i'll definately check out that game right after i type this. You play pretty good? Been watching artosis too ever since you posted that.

Thanks for all the rplys everyone! If/When i get this bad boy i'll be hitting you up gopher, and everyone else.

There is a ranked 1v1, 2v2 3v3 and 4v4 ladder. Along with an unranked FFA ladder. All the ladders each are ranked based on your performance in them. They don't count towards each other. You could be diamond in 4v4's yet only a bronze in 1v1's. You get 50 practice games or you can choose to skip them. After that you get 5 placement matches. After that it determines your rank within that "playlist". I've personally never seen anyone get higher then silver with just the first 5 matches. So you still have to work your way up. Playing against even level opponents till you work your way to the top.

Hope I got it all covered in that.

Ranks work differently in SC2, you get placed into a group of 100 people, you will play against these people(As long as they are online, if not you will be matched against other people in different groups of 100)

This table is a way to show what sort of rank you are without being ranked #78263 of #187366 instead you will be given a rank of

Silver #63 or something along them lines

Rank lists are as follows
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platanum, Diamond, Masters

Masters league was introduced recently and is for the best 200 people in the world.

It's only exciting to watch if you are into the game. Otherwise it is extremely boring watching things being placed on a map.
But I'm not downing the game in the realm of RTS's, I'm just saying that if you aren't into RTS games, than you will fall asleep watching a match.

I actually can't even watch matches depending on who is commentating them. I think the commentary helps so much, and it definitely depends on who is doing it. Even Halo gameplay I get bored watching if there isn't any interesting commentary over it sometimes.

I have never played SC2, but i love watching it, especially watching the MLG players. I don't if it would be a good investment if i just buy it or should i just go to a friend's house try it?
I mean it looks amazing and everyone says it's pretty good!

It is very fun, especially when you need a break from regular starcraft and play footmen frenzy, or DOTA

Nothing cant beat WC3 on those, but SC2 does them pretty well too
