New to Starcraft?

I know SC2 can be a very confusing game. Especially for those who don't play it as much as some. I'm making this thread for any general questions about the game that those of you might have. Feel free to just post your questions here (no question is stupid) and I'll answer it as quickly as possible. Of course I'm sure others will help me answer all your post as well.

i have played alot of SC 1 and some SC 2 and im still feeling noobish... i still cant seem to find a way to be strategic enough to stand toe to toe in Ladder play... i play P and Suggestions on how to make a good openning moves?

Depends on who your playing. Generally my build order for people who play as random is

9>Pylon
12>Gateway

Then about halfway through the build of your gateway build another pylon.
Then right as your gateway comes up throw down an Assimilator and throw 3 units on it. And build a Cybernetics Core. That way as soon as your Cybernetics Core comes up you can research Warpgates and get out a stalker.

After that a simple Protoss opening is to 4-gate and control your gateway units while upgrading their abilities. I'd get to where I was comfortable using a 4-gate strat before I tried anything else.

Blink stalkers can be a really good unit to utilize in most 1v1s. Once you get comfortable with you macro you can mass those and when you attack with them you "blink" the ones out whos shields drop to the back. That way your not actually losing units in a match. Stalkers can also kite just about any unit and have a really good range of attack. It's really just situational.

Terran. By far. Especially if you play the campaign.

its a great campain!! id play it just to enjoy it and yes Ter are by far the best for starters one good advatage is they can block the ramps but put their bases underground allowing your units to move over them then they can pop back up to make a wall again :)

Yes. Even if you don't play all of it, it is very helpful just to get basic controls and concepts. Also the single player challenges are really good to do. Even if you barely get through them, they make you start to recognize unit comps and simple macros.

Np. If you have questions about any words that get used or anything you can ask here or PM. I don't mind answering them for anyone. Some of the terms are hard to understand until you have played the game more. Once you realize what some of them mean you will be like, "Oh, well I already do that. Just never knew what it was called."

Starcraft is what got me into competitive gaming. So I could talk about it all day.

I mean you press buttons with out looking for them and know what button does what at any given time. It's the same concept in SC2. It's like picking up a controller for the first time. You have to look at what button does what for a while and work at it slowly till you develop a "muscle memory" in which your body knows what to do and what to press when your brain calls for it. :) In other words just takes practice.

You can play custom created games. Or you can do ranked 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or an unranked FFA.

GJ :) 2v2's can be hard. You just have to use your units together as one army for the most part.

hahaha. at that point, we were desperate to try anything that might have gotten us the win. And I have a question. When I try to look up good openings and stuff like that, it always says stuff like:Gateway-Centric Opening:

Basically it is a build that is centered around your drone count. Every number is your drone count and what you should be doing when you hit that number of drones. Its just an easy way for new people to remember build timings.

If you are playing Zerg, Get your Lair tech up. Usually after you have your Speedling research up and after you have got a roach warren.

After you have your Lair morph an Overseer and place it over your Drones. Or, make a SporeCrawler

You have to get a detector unit up basically. Protoss have observers and photon cannons, Terran have sentries, missile turrets and scans, zerg have spore crawlers and overseers.

You can choose anytime you want. Before you start a match it will ask you what race you wish to be (this includes random). I wouldn't mind helping you learn basics this weekend. Any member here would be awesome at getting you the knowledge you need to get started.

Great decision on getting the game. It takes a lot of time to learn even the essential build openings to the game, so don't get too frustrated with losing. That being said, you also get 50 practice games before you make your decision to compete in real ranked ladder games. These stats get reset after you leave the practice league, so it doesn't really matter how many games you lose - it's all about experimenting with new builds! I would suggest playing random, but if you have been watching a lot of vids already and feel protoss is the race you would like the most then go for it!

Yes that is normal, the game you have bought is Version 1. You need to patch it upto 1.2

If you bought a hard-copy, the cd shouldn't take as long to install as opposed to if you were downloading the client from the blizzard site then installing it (at least that is what I remember when I bought it). As for the patches, they will probably take awhile because there have been a lot of patches since the game came out.

I am having a blast just playing the story mode! I played one multiplayer match and I got obliterated rather quickly from a zerg roach rush! First of all, find a race you like to play(Except Terran) Play some 1v1's against the CP. Learn some strats and get basic macro down. After you have started to move up the difficulty ladders against CP players, start playing Ladder. Always remember to scout. Scouting is the key to victory, that and a decent idea of counters

Practice, practice, practice. Make a little cheat sheet and write the build on a paper and leave it next you.

Hey I've had this game for quite a while, but last night I dropped Halo: Reach and picked up SC2. I'm LOVING this game and I plan on playing it a lot and getting better. I have only played it for two days so there's many things I'd have to improve upon. I was wondering if anyone could practice with me, show me the ropes, give me tips, etc. I'm excited about this game and it's all I think about after I'm done like a 2hr session lol.

My main problem is, when do I expand? What do I do after my first push fails? How do I kill those damn camo units lmao

I've chosen Terran, just because of it's simplicity and I'd like to develop skill with a more basic race. I know ONE build, it's basically a marine/marauder rush, I will push out, win 60% of the time, other 40% they hold it off. By then they get better tech and beat me.

You have no idea how far that one build can get you in this game. Once you get timings down M/M rush can get you to gold easily. Feel free to add me though and we can run stuff.

I feel like Gym should be in here posting some great wisdom about Terran strats.

Other players have to upload them to a website. To my knowledge there isn't anyway to get others replays in game.
