View Full Version : Can Ethernet Cables be TOO long?

So as some of my friends may have noticed, I haven't been on XBL much lately. My new internet is complete trash and the router is pretty far away from my Xbox's wireless adapter (up the stairs and on the opposite side of the house). I'm thinking I should just buy a very long Ethernet cord. However, I need to know if an Ethernet cord can be TOO long. I don't want to spend money on a gigantic cord to have it not work or be completely slow.
Seriously, my new internet is so bad. I need help. :(

i dont think there is a such thing as being too long. but good luck finding a chord that will actually reach that far.

I wouldnt think it is, most big companies run long ethernet cables through buildings, ive used a 100 foot cable before and it worked like a charm

Nah you should be fine as long as it is going right from the router to your Xbox.

Technically yes, they can be too long! But in your case, you shouldn't have a problem. I don't feel like going into the technical details of ethernet cable right now but I suggest you check out MONOPRICE (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10208) and pick the cable length that you need. I've got two 50 footers from them as well as two 100 footers and they're fantastic!

If you can not find one that is far enough, you could simply make a Cat5 cable :)

Alright, one more question.
Is there such a thing as a splitter for ethernets? For example... can I get a 100 foot ethernet wire that then has 3 other ports on it that I can put 2-3 other small ethernet cords into.
So basically, I would put the 100 foot ethernet splitter into my router and have it end near me and my bro's xboxs and my laptop. Then have a separate ethernet wire from each xbox and laptop connect into that one 100 foot wire? And if I could do this, would that slow down my connection?
Last question, I promise. =) Obviously I'm bad with this kind of stuff.
Thanks for all the help!

I acctualy have a 100 foot cable running through my whole house from the kitchen where my router and modem is and I run it into my room(Its just about 100 feet) I hooked it up to a 8 port switch router and I have 3 xboxs hooked up or more all the time it works perfect imo.
And I have a computer hooked up to it.

get a cat 5e first of all, then you will be future proof.
second, light speed is light speed, 100ft won't make a difference, unless you're timing lag in nanoseconds lol.
i used to have a 50 ft cable going across my house to play xbl, and the only problem i had was other people tripping over it, so find a way to get it out of the way, like along the wall or something.
get a small ethernet switch, preferably gigabit unless it's too expensive, and that will work perfectly fine

Cat5e (ethernet) is rated up to 100meters (about 300ft) with no loss. Beyond that you will see heavy packet loss per foot. If it is more than 300ft you will need a repeater. I seriously doubt what you need is more than 300ft though.
You can use any small hub to split Cat5 signal. Something like this (http://sewelldirect.com/ethernet-hub-switch-5-port.asp?source=froogle&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=cse&cvsfa=1306&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=53572d36373335) or a small hub from Best Buy will work fine. Cat5e is Gbit transferrable, and is plenty for 2 xboxes. As long as you don't download from the lappy at the same time it should work out alright.

well i had one made for me and it was 150ft long and the only problem i had with it was sometimes the cords would get bent and the wires would be exposed but it lasted me over a year and it was def. a connection booster.

I have a 75' ethernet cable, worked fine when I needed it. There are ethernet splitters, too. No idea how well they work.

as long as you u can keep it no more than a 100 feet i don't think you will get any latency issues....also wireless is only its best when its in the =same room cause from the sound of it the signal has a bit of way to travel lol but i hope that you get it worked out

Run wireshark on your network to check for unwanted problems that might be causing the issue
