All Hail Mr. P
Major League Gaming is progressing and growing year after year. They have continued to garner more and more sponsors and interest. Why? Is it their marketing or their great planning? Maybe a bit, but I think it is more due to the efforts of the players and people like Joe Pennacchio. Joe is just a normal guy who has two sons that love the game. His youngest Anthony (Totz) is a pro player on Instinct (previously on Final Boss & Status Quo) and his oldest Joey (Joe Fries) was the Pro Coach of Status Quo for a while. What does this have to do with Joe? Glad you asked.
Joe is just another father who supports his kids. He loves being involved with his kids lives in MLG. His passion to get involved has led him to turn his basement into an incredible LAN center where top pros love to come hangout and play on a consistent basis. He has holds large events such as “the Summer LAN” and the “Winter WonderLAN” at his house and has top pros and semi-pros attend both. He has ran contests to fly the winner of the raffle out to be apart of this incredible experience. He also broadcasts live gameplay online for the events and even just for the pros gameplay in his basement. He has even gone so far as to open up a website that will allow fans to see live pro player gameplay and LAN scrimmages in HD quality through “The LAN Network”. The real questions are why has he done all this and what effect has this had on the community and the league as a whole?
First, he does it because he’s a giver and a visionary. He started by giving to his kids and the community. He set up a great LAN system in his basement and opened his doors to whomever wanted come in the pro and semi-pro ranks. When he began to see the popularity of it he instantly began to look for more ways to grow and promote the league that he embraces. He has in turn developed “The LAN Network”. TLN steams live gameplay of top pros daily and also features Live LAN coverage for the warm up LANs leading up to the events.
Second, what Joe has done in my opinion has carried MLG through some bad decision. From the change in the championship brackets, to lack of events and long stretches of downtime in between events, Joe and his LANnetwork have given MLG fans something to stay excited about. He has given the MLG fan gaming and competition of the Pros when they would otherwise have had no opportunity to watch. With MLG running minimal events, making extraordinarily difficult for amateur teams to break into the pro ranks, charging spectators a fee to watch and taking away some of the more exciting parts of the event for amateurs (the free-for-all contest) they haven’t really helped themselves the way the could have. It even appears at times that they have other agendas besides the enjoyment of the fans that make this sport a reality.
Even though they may or may not admit the level of benefit they received, MLG and the community owe Joe much thanks for all he has done. Joe’s passion for the game and desire to help others enjoy it as well has really helped continue the growth and foster more and more excitement in the world of Major League Gaming. Much love to Joe Pennacchio.

I think the point about giving the fans something to be excited about between events is very true. Whether it is a team, a player, a band , a movie franchise whatever if they go away too long the excitement wanes.
Before I found TLN I would know nothing about the MLG teams in the off season. Come the season opener I would learn about all the team changes, get confused and have to start from scratch determining which teams I thought were good.
To me exposure to the pros and the frequency of content is the gap that TLN is filling.
