I've finally decided to pick up MvC3 and I need the community to help me find a good, and relatively cheap, fight stick. I would prefer that it has an OctoGate, but it can be something else if its easy to mod. I do want to trick it out with custom buttons and stuff, but I'm sure you can do this stuff on all sticks.

Help, please!

Good stuff Joe.

Unfortunately, you're not very likely to find a fight stick with an octo gate right off the bat. Also, if you're planning on a cheap stick, it'll be relatively hard to find a way to mod it to be an octo gate. If it's the real stuff (Sanwa JLF) like it is inside a TE stick, it's really easy to switch.

That being said, if you're really looking to go cheap, head to your local Best Buy and see if you can get lucky enough to find a Tekken 6 Special Edition. If they have one, it's $30, includes T6, and a wireless fight stick that's pretty decent. Gweedo suggested the stick that I have, but I've modified mine to have actual arcade parts. The stuff in it already is good though, and you won't notice if you're not used to real parts. A step down would be the HORI EX2. Decent enough, I used a friends and had no problem with them. They run around $40-60 depending on where you buy from.

If you're going to mod it with legit stuff, the Madcatz SE is definitely the way to go. It was built with a modder in mind, it already has quick-disconnects making all of your modifications plug and play. Any of the other sticks not Madcatz will require some type of soldering/drilling/dremeling/etc.

Here's a pic of my SE.

HORIs are good, but the FGC would unanimously agree that Madcatz TE sticks are the best. You're gonna have trouble finding them right now though, they're popular. The HRAP (HORI Real Arcade Pro) series are high end HORI parts, so they're great, but not completely authentic.

If you're only playing for fun, then an HRAP is more than enough. If you're serious about getting better, the Madcatz TE is definitely the thing to have. Check out shoryuken.com's Trading Post forums for some decent deals.

Joe, I suggest you stick with a square gate. I was hesitant with a square gate at first but after you get used to it, I promise you you'll be more accurate.

but if you must change the gate, its inexpensive and there are vids on youtube.

I don't think you can get anything with an octogate for that cheap unless you mod it yourself, even then im not sure its possible. I plan on getting a TE just because I hear you have to fix cheaper ones alot and it seems worth it to not have to repair it as frequently. And the square gate seems scary but the more I think about it the more I think I will like it, it will help with any Z motion for sure.
