Hey Havkin Here. Recently i recommened a Hori Fighting to to Mr. Joe Fries... to his Dismay he got a Square Gate and wanted an Octo gate. with this said it got me thinking on what Gate really is Better is Octo better than square or is it just Prefrence?

I have played on Square most of the time. i recently played on a Octo gate and Wound up Droping my Combos and having a harder time blocking down low. i have searched every major Fighting game fourm out there and most people would rather have a Square gate than a Octo gate. here is my list of Pros and Cons for both

(QCT Means Quarter Circle Turn)

Square Gate
+Easier to Block
+combos can be less precise and still work
+ jump combos are easier to pull off Straight in the air.
- "Z" motion Comboes are harder to hit.
- need to judge were the middle of the Square wall is for QCT combo attacks.
- Loud Clicking Nose

Octo Gate
+ Full range of motion
+ no loud clicking noise
+ Stick moves Smoother
- You need Great presision to hit you combos or even block
- "Charge" Characters have a hard time knowing if they are Charging an attack or not (see people like Chun Li, Guile, and Vega in SSF4)
- you gotta mod you Stick to even get one
-easier to miss a imput in your range of motion if its not QCT. things like Chun Li's Ultra
(<(C) >, <,> PPP)

at the end of the Day i would rather use a Square Gate than Octo but whats your guys Thoughts?

2 solid Agruments i found

Octo Gates side

If you're a dedicated gate rider more than likely the octagonal gate will perform better for you. The main issue that people have with square gate usage that causes problems is that they like to ride the gate so they get stuck in the corners and end up not finishing their motions because they end up stopping at a corner when they're attempting QCF or QCB motions. Octagonal allows you to ride the gate for these motions without issue.

Square Gates side

Square gates are going to be what you're going to find in the authentic japanese cabs. And I find them easier whenever I have to use DPs (The corner catches way the hell better), but with some work, QCF is pretty easy, too. Really, you're going to get a square gate stock, just learn to not ride the gate. That makes your motion more efficient and your execution so much better, square or octo gate.

Definitely had to learn to not "ride the gate" when I first got a stick. QCF and DP were so hard at first, but now it's so easy. I've played with an octagon gate before and I didn't care much for it after. But that's just my opinion.

Thanks for posting this Havkin!!

The testimonial says that his DP's are easier but aren't those Z motions and on the - side? And I don't think the loud clicking is square gate specific, its a feature that alot of players like because they can tell when they have moved the stick far enough for their command to be inputted
