View Full Version : Games to play before you die.

I don't really care much for playing Reach online anymore, and because of this I've returned to playing a lot of epic single player games a la my younger years. This means that I've booted up my Wii for like the first time in like a year, and I'm actually loving it. Now I'm looking for some new games to try.

Which brings me to the actual point of this thread. Post some games that you think every gamer should play at least once before they die. This can be the classics, such as Super Mario Bros. 3 or Ocarina of Time, games you felt flew under the radar when they were released, or just any game you really enjoyed and want to share. These games don't have to be single player games only, feel free to post multiplayer games if you feel they meet the criteria.

Here is a very small taste of my list:
1. Okami(PS2/Wii)- It definitely contends for my favorite game of all time, and it wasn't a huge commercial success when it was released. Anyone who is a fan of Zelda titles will absolutely love this game, or anyone who loves all things that are gorgeous.

2. Psychonauts(Xbox/PS2/PC)- Anything Tim Schafer puts his name on is gold, and that should be the selling point there. This game is a fantastic platformer, has strong story telling, and is probably the funniest game I've ever played. Another under the radar game.

3. Chrono Trigger(SNES/DS)- My favorite RPG of all time. Amazing combat and story telling definitely makes this a game everyone deserves to try.

4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker(GC)-I could have easily put almost any Zelda here. Everything in the series is golden, Zelda II and all CD I Zelda games excluded, but the reason I put this game is I feel like it's one of the best Zelda's that gets the least respect, although it has garnered more popularity since its initial release.

Wind Waker was such an amazing game. One of the longest, scratch that, the longest storyline I have ever played in my entire life. One of my all time favorite games.

Paper Mario (N64)

Omg CLASSIC GAME! I had this game for N64 and my dad used to play it with me all the time and we beat it after sooo long. Such a good game.

I think everyone needs to play Oblivion on Xbox 360 as well. Such a great game. You can spend 100's of hours on that game.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - I've spent around 30 weeks of real time(5000+ hours) playing this game since its release for Xbox. I don't like the PC version. Sure, it doesn't have a ridiculous load time, but I can't relax and play a PC game, which was exactly the point of this.

Indigo Prophecy - The "battle" system, if you can even call it that, is a bit contrived and silly. But this game really makes you feel the emotions of a character, and allows you to interact with the world more fully than many conventional games allow. -Forgot to put, this game was developed by the same studio that brought you Heavy Rain. For the original Xbox and PC.

Super Mario 3 - I remember watching a movie as a kid where there were these dudes traveling across the U.S. to play video games for money or something like that. They unveiled Super Mario 3 at the tournament. My memory is hazy--I was very little. This game took about four years of my childhood. Probably my first nudge in the direction of competitive gaming, sadly.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - The best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best, the best.

Chrono Cross - I'm actually curious...is there anyone out there who prefers Chrono Trigger who DIDN'T play it before CC?

Killer Instinct - I will destroy you with Cinder. No contest.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - The original. Either PlayStation or N64, though I prefer N64 because the controls feel tighter. Also, if you think you can beat me on Warehouse, I'll laugh. J/k, but, you'd have to be able to consistently put up millions... Why is this the only game I'm so good at? o.O

Final Fantasy VI - The American 3. I love this game!

Paper Mario was my life until the 5th grade haha. And YES! I actually just got Oblivion not too long ago, and man, there is so mcuh stuff to do in that game! I feel like I can always just go back to it and play for a little.

I played chrono trigger first, but spent alot more time on chrono cross and while I liked the main story of trigger more I had more fun in chrono cross because of all the possibilities and having to play the game multiple times to get all the characters.

As for my list here it goes:

Chrono Trigger/Cross: already spoke about it above but the series is one of my favorite ever.

any Final Fantasy: I can't pick any game in specific but everyone should play thru atleast one square rpg

Super Mario 64: This game redefined gaming for me, it was the first open world time game I played and the way you go thru the castle and jump thru that paintings, the never ending stairs all that stuff really just kept me amazed as a kid.

Dynasty Warriors 4: For anyone who likes history and is interested in eastern culture this game is awesome, it's based on facts but they don't really tell you what actually happened they let you pick a side and bring them to victory, but it caused me to look up the story and its really cool to play as these people who actually lived. It also explains the war in a much more realistic way than other games, people defect, switch sides, take bribes and the game just isn't as black and white as most games, your allys one mission will be your enemys the next.

Pokemon
Im not going to say pokemon red and blue are the best, because I think it really depends on when you discovered pokemon, to me the best games were gold and silver, or possibly the remakes. We all know how the pokemon games play, but to me this is the one thing that I will grow up with even if it dosent grow up, theres nothing like picking your started and then just exploring the world. If I could only play one more game it would be a pokemon game

Epic! I can't wait for the 3rd one to come out if it ever does! I'm getting tired of all of these prequels and hand held games.

I didn't even know this game was popular haha. I play this whenever I go to friend's house. Such a good game!

"Genesis does what Nintendon't"

lmao, I guess that was on Genesis then?

Anyway, I have a funny story about Sonic. If anyone has ever played the original, then you know the part where you are kind of in a narrow underground tunnel thing and lava would start flowing towards you. Well my dad would always sit at the very end of the tunnel and wait for the lava to get really really close and I would start freaking out. lol
