The quake was followed by a Tsunami. Related warnings went out to several islands and countries.

It seems like there is a lot of natural disasters happening lately. Kind of scary. Was watching CNN last night and what I was viewing didn't look like real life, it looked like a disaster movie ala 2012. Thoughts go out to all those whose lives were effected by this, words fail in times like these. All those on the west coast, be safe and get away from the shores. Wow. :(

Some schools are closed down by where I live on the west coast (Victoria BC, right by Seattle) but I'm pretty sure we'll be fine, prayers are going to japan

The cooling systems of a nuclear reactor north of Tokyo were damaged. Apparently since the reactor cannot cool down, they're thinking about releasing some of the radiation to help it. :(

guys, dont worry. its not the start of 2012. in case you dint notice, its still 2011. the reactors thing is pretty bad but itd be better to let out a little radiation then have a nuclear reactor explode, IMO

I know they will make it through this, but I just hope other countries can help them out...Normally it is times like these that bring the world together unfortunately...

There's been no emergency situations in Cali or Hawaii as of right now. Everyone that was told to evacuate pretty much did. There's some structural damage though.

I heard those are 3 foot waves in the middle of the ocean. Unnoticeable if you are in the middle of the ocean but translate to big waves at shore.

Seeing this happen in Japan makes me makes me feel nervous about living in Vancouver, we are decades behind a giant earthquake.

This is terrible, theres a link on yahoo to donate to organizations who are going to help Japan, when I donated I chose the red cross and it lets you specify what you want your donation used for and you can type in Japan relief effort or something like that.

...no.

There is a lot of rumors of celebs, artist, game designers, manga/anime (pop culture people in general) dieing. It's so stupid, and no official news outlet is going to report on celebrity deaths, especially at this time.

One thing that is really bothering me though is disgusting people like this: http://img534.imageshack.us/i/1299926235385.jpg/
I can imagine that after they got done typing those comments on their Japanese laptops, they probably played their Sony PS3 on their Japanese TV. Or maybe they were typing that on their Japanese phone while driving their Japanese cars. Whatever.

been watching these 2 streams for the last 4 or so hours (watch them both at the same time, yokosonews is translating NHK and adding input):
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nhk-gtv
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/yokosonews

better than foreign outlets (they can be a bit late).

ignore those idiots...
ignorant people who have no basic understanding of history to begin with. to compare a natural disaster to an act of war is ridiculous, and most of the people saying those things weren't even alive to have lived through the experience so they should just keep their mouths shut about things they don't understand. unfortunately, they have things like facebook, and twitter, where they feel justified in their own self-important ramblings.

Yea those people have serious problems, personally Im not going to hold it against you if my grandpa and your grandpa didnt like each other for a while. And its not even that personal, Japanese soldiers in Pearl Harbor were just serving their country no matter what, a value that alot of Americans admire and emulate, stupid people.
