View Full Version : Has reach died?

From the beginning, my brother, a semi-professional halo player by the end of halo 3, hated reach and only played for 3 weeks. His teammates played Halo 3 for months after the release of reach, but recently they quit as well. Several of my brother's friends, who were on a team ranked #1 in gamebattles for several weeks, quit instantly and even the average joe has quit. So, does the lack of good maps, too much ability to spawn trap, and the loss of integrity in the MLG playlist (players quit at the first sign of losing) make you want to quit also. I can not stand matchmaking because it is all so easy and requires near no skill. I love forge but I would trade it to go back to halo 2.

Reach is a "new" game. it is still halo, just different. everyone shoudl go back to when h3 came out ad people still wet back to h2. its the same scenario. as soon as MLG kicks off the whole atmosphere of reach will change. trust me, the trend has always been the same. Reach is fine, IMO reach is more interesting.

Pretty sure there are a lot of people who would disagree with that statement as the spawns are pretty random, which makes it a little more complicated to spawn trap.

The title was misleading.
i think it needs a couple of patches for certain issues but it's one of the best halo's ever made in my opinion.

i don't think reach is as good as any of the other halos. i don't think MLG is going in the right direction, i personally think v2 was more fun than v3, excluding various gametypes, but the new maps are not good imo. my brother and i both have xboxes and both got copies of halo reach, and he sold his copy back last week because he hated it so much. bungie is making a classic playlist and they gave away some settings and it sounds amazing. they are implementing the settings that i really wanted MLG to use, and bungie is also testing a bunch of forge remakes. unless MLG changes reach for v4, i will probably be playing the classic playlist, just because reach is so boring and repetitive. i do enjoy watching it however, and events and LANs will definitely kick ass, but playing it is just too annoying for me.

he has had about 10 different gamer tags but his most recent one is Godrick X. When he was doing best he was iBioxic. The 4 times he got sponsored and was about to go to an event they had to drop a member so they had 3 regular members and couldn't find a fourth. But, they were top 10-50 on gamebattles consistently when they got there fourth.

I honestly don't enjoy playing reach online at all. I have no idea why I do it to be honest, I guess I haven't had a chance to find something to fill the large time gap in my life that the previous halos consumed.
It is by far the worst with hit registration of the halos to date and when you include the randomness of the DMR it is nearly unbearable. And without true skill you know whether or not you're going to win 9 out of 10 games before they even start. Lets see: they have a team of 4 and I get 2 guys that have played a total of 20 games and have a .4 K/D. Hmm. Or the other way around. And don't even get me started on the amount of people in the MLG playlist without mics. Its an epidemic. Random Team Slayer kids in Halo 2 understood the value of calling out better than most of these kids who are calling themselves "MLG" players now. Not the Team Hardcore kids, Slayer kids.
Either way it really just isn't fun for me and i really wish it was as I have had a good 10 years or so of fond Halo memories. Halo Reach may very well be the death of halo for me anyways. Oh well all good things must come to an end. For anyone who continues on I wish you the best but I guess you can't teach a old dog new tricks after all :(

i agree, halo reach definitely is too random, and terrible online. i'm sure it's fun on LAN, but it still does not have the same fun factor as the other halos did. I played halo 2 last week and had a blast. i'm sure halo reach will be good in time, especially if bungie releases a much needed patch which nerfs rockets, nades, and sniper so that damage can be put on 110 for 4-shot DMR, or a patch which allows for the removal of bloom, which would make the game 10x better imo, and would require much more skill, and would create much more consistency online and on LAN.

I just can not adapt to the bloom itself. I never have been a fan from the moment I heard of perks being added. I do believe though that it does have some potential, but needs major mods I believe will not come. With the rumors floating around about Halo 4 or Halo CE remake I really could care less about Reach.
The history (since 2004) I have with watching MLG and following pro's is the only reason I will watch the future events. I believe I have pointed out enough how much the Bloom and AA has changed the way past Halo games were played, and have acknowledge the fact I simply DO NOT like Reach.
So I have taken others peoples advice when they say to me... "if you do not like it DON'T play it then!" Well, that is indeed what I have come to do over the past 3 months. I have more fun playing Midship/ Heretic flag games or slayer on The Pit than any Reach game.
I am also a believer that no matter what game is release from here on out, it will not ever be the same as it was on Halo 2 MM. Halo 2 was the introduction to many memorable games [Heavy Weights 2v2 Orgre Twins vs Shockwave n Gahndi on Lock out] and classic trash talk. It was the beginning to an exceptional community that flourish off each other. After Halo 2 MM, the community exploded, it brought new games into online FPS competitive, as well as new breed of gamers. <-- I'm referring to you campers/boyscouts

Like KRILLIN once said
"I don't think there should be bloom at all. What's wrong with having a gun that hits what you are aiming at."
The funny thing is the amount of players on Reach lately is diminishing little by little each month. Those numbers are no where near Halo 3 six month release. At the end of the day , to each their own. Majority of the people I know only play Reach because it is MLG's Flag ship game. Majority of the people posts' are used to sell the game to keep it alive for the previous reasons.
So to answer your question finally :) Yes I believe Reach population is dying. Look at the facts posted on Bungie. At the end of the day... play what you have fun with. I've held a Halo 2 lan over here in our neighborhood and everyone had a blast, and since I enjoy H3 MLG settings better, I will stick with playing what I have fun with the most. I will continue to watch Pro's play Reach until I can no longer fathom the one shot sprint runners!
343i might bring us hope after all.

I just wanted to throw out there something that wasn't mentioned. Competition. Black Ops, Medal of Honor, Bulletstorm, Homefront, Dragon Age 2, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space 2, and so on. Safe to say a lot of these are big-name titles, advertised to the point that they were virtually stuffed down our throats. It's no wonder the playlist population has been on a decline.
But, lets look back at the H3 time period. Specifically, I can recall when MW2 came out, and the playlist was dead. A few months later, it was gaining strength again. CoD doesn't have the staying power it seems. Probably because they release a new game every 6-months, compared to Halo's 3+ years. A majority of my friends list shifted from H3 to MW2 for several weeks, but they all came back, and some of them still continue to play H3 to this day.
I'm not saying these people will be coming back to Reach, but I think it's at least fair to give this information as a possibility, instead of just blatantly bashing Reach and prematurely pronouncing it ready to go 6 feet under.

YES ^
I played Halo 2 all the time. I loved that game because it was my first FPS I had ever tried being competitive with. It had a great feel to it. I like that Reach has that same "feel".. they've just added some dimension to it: sprint, bloom, etc..
This is a new game. Halo 3 had problems in the beginning like someone else above already mentioned. Soon Reach will grow and win the hearts of the majority of the community just as Halo 3 did.

I know that for me one of my biggest complaints is the lack of integrity of kids online. Back in halo 2 or even Halo 3 if you played the MLG playlist kids stuck around. They didn't quit as soon as it seemed they were losing because they wanted to get better and when you face adversity and continue on you find success and you find skill. The time where playing against a better player is a good thing because it challenges your integrity and you overall ability is over because you can simply quit and not feel bad bout leaving your teammates. The true root of this is the lack of a ranking system. Allow the low level 10s to quit out of their mlg games but very few 50s would quit out no matter what. I agree with what has been said here: reticule bloom has to go. That is a must. I think DMRs need to be fixed because at this point I find the needle rifle more like the BR than the DMR. But, most off all the MLG playlist needs fixing. I mean come on! The don't even have the current maps in it yet, or current settings. I think AA have no place in MLG, they ruin the basis of it, we all seemed to get along fine with out being able to move 200 miles per hour in halo2 and halo3. Who ever makes the settings for MLG needs too be seriously talked to because the average player hates them. Lastly, those who compare this to halo2 you are wrong. Halo 2 had an outstanding community of supportive and usually team players who wanted to not only have fun, on the first ever XBL game, but they wanted to be like Walshy, and the Ogre Twins, and strongside, and Karma. These days I mute people because when I hear them talk I think of my baby cousin who is six. IT MAKES MY EAR BLEED. They rage quit too easily, they yell things cause they think it makes them sound older, and they are simply annoying. This game is...in seriously need of fixing, and until it is done the numbers will continue to dwindle. Does anyone know a game that may fill my time, when not forging on reach or 3, that is enjoyable?

The population of people in Reach is so small. I really don't understand why people think that Reach is a better game than 3.
By the time it is 1 year old, it will average less than 500 players playing MLG at the same time. When Halo 3 was 1 year old it averaged over 10,000 players playing at the same time. Going out with a bang? I don't think so.
Skill gap is also a lot smaller than it was for Halo 2 and Halo 3.
How is spamming and getting the kill 1/2 the time skillful?
And the people liking Reach more also complains about the game, you know who you are.
The reasons why they complain: spawning system, HOST, the map itself, camo, etc.
The only thing I have a problem with is Sanctuary when I face people running 4s.

How many times are you going to post this nonsense.....?
Until I die.
And how am I not good enough? I rarely go negative in Reach and I win most games.
I know its hard for you to admit that the game is dead but come on, stop being ridiculous. Having a 50 meant nothing in Halo 3. It was so easy that I can get one on 1 day without boosting.
Like I said, the only thing I hate about the game is the map Sanctuary.
I don't like the other things in that game also, but I can live with it.

a lot of people , i.e. people with 50s in dubs only, love this game, but like i said they had shit 50s in the easiest playlist. But, those who played MLG on their 50s in that hate this game, I already mentioned my brother and his friends, but there are more people on HALO3 MLG than reach MLG. This isn't nonsense its the truth. This game is broken and I can't stand it we need good maps with good spawns and good weapons. But, most of all we need host to be taken away, along with reticule bloom, the ridiculous amount of damage a grenade does, and the DMR needs changing. Well said Undrground

There is a reason why I prefer Halo 3. And you pretty much mentioned it. I love how Canadian Gym says I'm not good at Reach when I went +11 with two -20 teammates against him the other day. He then said I camped in the back with the sniper on Sanctuary. How did I camp in the back with the sniper when I made his team have at least three down the most on my team for CTF??? See now I like people who can back up their opinions with facts.
But I haven't met at least 1 person who can do that for Halo Reach.
The only thing that is better is the forging in my opinion. I'm tired of listing reasons why because to people opinions are more important than facts.

I love how countless number of pros sit there and say how much better of a game this is than Halo 3, yet average players hate it.
Adapt to the bloom or play a different game. It's quite simple. It's faster, more skillful (yes, bloom adds another dimension to shooting, even Ogre 2 said it), and more diverse.
People say the population is lower because the game sucks, yet can't it also be taken as the population is so low because people aren't good and won't take the time to adapt? What makes the reason be "the game is bad"?

i watched the vids to me this is what it was...
1st vid- guy basically said it was built for mlg, hes just a social player and hated it cause he felt it was for competitive gamers, so no big deal to me.
2nd vid- was just dumb nothing to validate anything.
3rd vid- was again nothing but a social thing, woo hoo. not really funny.
4th vid- he reviewed the beta which was pretty much social.
@people talking down reach
I'd agree that in the casual/social gaming aspect it sucks. Competitive wise I enjoy more than h3 but a hell of a lot less than h2. Here's the thing though, Bungie isn't going to be dealing with Reach sometime in the future anymore, it'll all be 343 in which I can say I'm happy. Plus Reach was supposed to be different than the other Halo games in which it succeeded in. If it was gonna be like every other Halo game it just would have been a patch after patch. Nothing new and nothing different. It's like getting PO'd over the James Bond games for not being exactly like Goldeneye.
I guess I just don't understand why people still complain about a new game because it's different. If you wanna play H2 get XBC and play it. H3 you can still play that online and same with Reach. It literally comes down to well I can either sit here and complain about something while still playing that game and not doing a thing about it or I can look at my options and choose from those. Don't get me wrong I still think that H2 was the best Halo to date, but I play MLG playlist for Reach because I choose not to play social and I honestly thought H3 was trash so I don't play that anymore.
In the long run complaining about something gets you nowhere, taking action does. Basically, if you don't like something then quit playing the game and play something you do enjoy or find a new game. There's many out there, not just one.

when i did a transfer from halo 2 to halo 3 i felt it sucked. i had no motivation to play it since i played halo 2 since its released. Halo 3 was terrible at first, the pace of the game was drastically reduced compared to halo 2 gameplays. Now i watched the previous season of halo 3 and the v8 settings, it turned out pretty good, better than what i thought when it was first released. I regret not playing halo 3 since release to end now since towards the end of halo 2 of was really getting some where in the MLG scene. Reach is gonna turn out the same way as halo 3 did, not so good at the start and great in the end. Btw the game is amazing on LAN.

ok so reach needs a couple things to be patched and i believe that it will be the best halo released. hitbox when sniping needs to be smaller cause sniping feels almost too easy. bloom resetting a little faster would be alot nice and would also promote faster kills(which would mean you could get the sick multikills that you would see in h2 and h3). nades need to be nerfed a little simply because they are like mini nukes. i also believe that the melee system needs to be redone. it feels to easy to run up on someone and beat them down 3 times.
all in all reach is a good game. after the opener i would bet that 75% of the people that hate reach will come back after seeing the pros play on the mainstage. and last time i remember h2 was a god awful game before it was patched and the early stages of h3 were bullshit as well.

This game's a breath of fresh air after the past 3 years.
You are correct about this. I also have adapted to the game, but I'm not really happy about it. I didn't say the game sucks, I just don't like people like Canadian Gym change my words just because I prefer Halo 3. I'm not really a fan of "late bloomers." In other words, people who decide to get into MLG just because of the Halo games changing. The portion of the population from Halo 3 left Halo for good because it changes. That's what also happened for Halo 2 to Halo 3. But what is different though is that the population of overall Halo players is now smaller than ever(it brings it back to the "late bloomers"). The reason why this is connected is because people now think they will have a greater chance of becoming MLG pro, and people who just started just happen to talk the most trash than anyone else. I just came from playing MLG w/ shread and glyde. I'll admit this game is getting better and better. Its pretty fun now, but I can really tell how people were in recent Halo games by how much trash they talk now because it happens just so often.
But truthfully, I used to play H3 for about 12-17 hours a day because of how fun playing MLG customs and the MLG playlist was. Reach needs to change somehow for it to be a fun MLG and regular experience because it feels as if its more near the regular experience.

@people talking down reach
That was for LOLz. :)

ok so reach needs a couple things to be patched and i believe that it will be the best halo released. hitbox when sniping needs to be smaller cause sniping feels almost too easy. bloom resetting a little faster would be alot nice and would also promote faster kills(which would mean you could get the sick multikills that you would see in h2 and h3). nades need to be nerfed a little simply because they are like mini nukes. i also believe that the melee system needs to be redone. it feels to easy to run up on someone and beat them down 3 times.
all in all reach is a good game. after the opener i would bet that 75% of the people that hate reach will come back after seeing the pros play on the mainstage. and last time i remember h2 was a god awful game before it was patched and the early stages of h3 were bullshit as well.
That is true, but what they also need to fix is the matchmaking system for those Halo 2 and 3 people and not so much for new gamers.

i think it will pick it up if theres actually some good maps for MLG playlist, im sick of the same old scenery just like top grey (because all the blocks are) so yeah if theres new maps then it should be okay :D
I agree. There should be a "Flashback" map pack like Gears 2 has. If I would choose, I would pick Construct (if it can play better than Countdown), Narrows, NOT THE PIT (overrated), maybe foundry with updated forging capabilities for better scale, and Heritic/Midship. What I would want to take out is Sanctuary, also Sanctuary, and possibly Sanctuary if the map doesn't play well if MLG settings changed. :)

The problem isn't that it's too easy or too hard for everyone, it is that it is TOO EASY for people with a great connection, and too PAINSTAKINGLY frustrating for the people with average connection.

You do have a point. Halo 3's host was not much of a pain compared to Reach.

How about say forget the halo 3 maps and bring back warlock, lockout, beaver creek, sanctuary, midship (for it to have 9 years on the circuit =p). But if they were to remake halo 3 (i hope they dont) i wouldnt want them to remake narrows. A lot of people hated it and a lot of people loved it. It was really a map with a love hate factor to it.
@Toolbox: Remember pre-patch magnums were the best, BR was shit, you could grab anything through walls (oddball on lock esp), and it took like 6 beatdowns to kill someone. Im probably missing something else. Oh yea dummy glitch xD. I think they pacthed that later though. Or the sword lung with rockets. halo 2 never got boring.

In other words, people who decide to get into MLG just because of the Halo games changing. The portion of the population from Halo 3 left Halo for good because it changes. That's what also happened for Halo 2 to Halo 3. But what is different though is that the population of overall Halo players is now smaller than ever(it brings it back to the "late bloomers").
But truthfully, I used to play H3 for about 12-17 hours a day because of how fun playing MLG customs and the MLG playlist was. Reach needs to change somehow for it to be a fun MLG and regular experience because it feels as if its more near the regular experience.
Yessir!! Agree iUndrground !
I love how countless number of pros sit there and say how much better of a game this is than Halo 3, yet average players hate it. So Ola, Fis and countless other pro's are consider average? That is a double edge sword according to that statement. Some play it for the bling bling cmon now
Adapt to the bloom or play a different game. It's quite simple. It's faster,(just because you can sprint does not make the 1v1 action faster. If sprinting and shooting would be possible, then yes, it would be faster due to the fact that in all the Halo games the movement allowed you to run and gun. Now it is sprint...pause aim, shoot... wait for bloom  and shoot again.) more skillful (yes, bloom adds another dimension to shooting, even Ogre 2 said it), and more diverse. I am playing a different game :)Also at the National Champions Julie ask Ogre what he thinks about Reach, He believes it will be the same, but he never had high hopes for Reach. Link provided:

He starts with saying he is happy it will be a different game, but towards the end admits He does not have or ever HAD High hopes for REACH. It is all about advertising and they get payed well for doing it.
People say the population is lower because the game sucks, yet can't it also be taken as the population is so low because people aren't good and won't take the time to adapt? What makes the reason be "the game is bad"? It is not so much about adapting, but also about an Introduction for NEW breed of gamers. It is about bringing in a new community into Halo. Halo was unique from the other FPS games out there, and Bungie tried to bring in more gamers and drastically failed.
This game's a breath of fresh air after the past 3 years. Not so fresh when the population is dropping monthly. Also it has been 7 years that all the Halo games kept it simple run and gun. No perks, No AA, No animation assassinations ect ect..
I changed the text color for my opinions. Hopefully I answered your questions. Just telling it how it is from an outside p.o.v
I am waiting patiently for Halo 4 or any Halo with a BR-55 :)

i honestly feel like reach would be much more fun without bloom. i think people should be able to die in 5 spam shots. every other halo it was a faster kill with the primary weapon. in reach it takes so long to kill someone, that even someone who has bad reaction time, can get hit 4 times, realize they're no shields, and sprint away before the opponent can hit them another 3 times in the body, assuming hypothetically that the opponent is pacing and the guys head is not in view. it just takes too long. if you have rockets, you shoot and kill a guy from 10 feet away. sniper is fairly easy to no scope, and it's pretty easy to hit someone twice in the body before they can shoot you 5 times, and the gap between shots allows for easy quickscopes as well. in halo 3, the br was almost like a constant stream of bullets, and it left the player with much less time to try and pull off a no-scope or quickscope. i just think the game would be more fun and balanced if the dmr was a little stronger. i played halo 3 yesterday, and i was dying so fast because i wasn't used to getting hit with 4 quick shots and that was it. i feel like reach is a good game, but the bloom is a major flaw/downside because it makes the dmr useless against power weapons, whereas in other halos, they were very well balanced. like in halo 1, rockets were super powerful, but the pistol was a 3 shot, it made it balanced, and if someone was good enough, they could 3 shot the rocket guy before he can even shoot. i feel like reach has too high of a luck to skill ratio compared to h1, 2, and 3. i don't think any competitive game should involve that much luck. no bloom would eliminate most of the luck in reach and make the game more competitive, separate the good from the great, and so on. i hope bungie can find a way.
one other thing though, KC please raise the freaking jump height to 125!!! i can't get on the rocks on sanctuary!!! thanks.
also, the no bloom would make online much more consistent and more similar to lan as well

nades need to be nerfed a little simply because they are like mini nukes.
My biggest problem with Reach. The beat down system as well makes no sense. One person can have 3 shots in them, the other person 1 shot into them. They can both beat each other down and both be one shot. That isn't right, It just doesn't make any sense. There should also be an option to turn off assassination animations. It is annoying as hell accidentally doing the whole animation on someone when you just want to back smack them.
Finally, I really wish that bloom be decreased. That, or bring it back to a 4 shot kill. The bloom is currently set so that you can hit the first 4 shots perfectly with no problems, but the 5th shot is when all hell breaks loose. Something needs to be done about this though. Like said before, it is almost impossible to get high multikills in this game unless people are weak. They take a long time to kill.
jew, I just read your post and agree with all of it. Sniping is sooo easy in this game. But that can't really be patched. I would love for them to take the pointless bloom off the sniper though. wtf is the point!?!?!
Huge patch soon would be sick.
