The time has come, everyone was watching as Final Boss (victory x, igoturpistola, Ogre2, and FearItSelf) and Impact(Amish Acorns, Adrenaline, Lethul, and Neighbor) duked it out on the mainstage, as evident by the frequent crashing of the site. I could hear the gasps around the world as the underdog Impact 3-0'd the reigning national champions of Halo: Reach's predecessor, Halo 3. Whats even more amazing is the fact that these games werent even that close.
In the first game Zealot Capture the Flag, Impact came out firing, literally, as they outshot, outplayed, and outmaneuvered Final Boss. Neighbor, of Impact, is infamous for being a total slayer, some would say “stat-whore” and would never touch the objective once. Well ladies and gents, meet the new neighbor, the one who scored 2 out of 5 of the flag c aps for impact. Whats even more amazing was that he seemed to outslay Final Boss just as much, if not more, than the other members of his team. Seeing Amish Acorns run in the final flag cap to finish the match 5-1 I could only think to myself “Well, Final Boss just hasn't warmed up yet. Next game will be different!” This is why I am not a betting man, Final Boss played extremely passive in the next game, Sanctuary Slayer, and let Impact come back from a 5 kill lead to steal the game 50-47.
AT LAST! FORTUNE SHINES UPON FINAL BOSS! They get to play their best combination of map and gametype, Zealot Assault. The game started with Final Boss taking down all 4 members of Impact and immediately gaining map control to arm the first bomb. However, Impact manages to diffuse the bomb with three seconds remaining until detonation. This was the turning point in the game. Impact utilized their superor teamwork by moving in pairs of two for the majority of the game. Simply put, Final Boss spread out across the map trying to utilize a typical Halo 3 setup, while Impact adapted to the needs of Halo: Reach and laid down a more affective teamshot. Impact had the lead 2-0 going into the final two minutes of regulation time, when Victory X manages to secure both an arm and a detonation of the bomb. It came down to the wire. Could Final Boss turn on the “Boss Sauce” or would Impact keep applying pressure to Final Boss, and let the timer run out. The key player was Amish Acorns. Amish picked up the sniper rifle and put a sniper bullet into two members of final boss, managing to then clean up one of with a grenade while his teammate cleaned up the latter. Amish then finished the game strong with a killing spree as the game clock ran out of time. Wow... just wow. This series probably best sums up the attitude of MLG 2011, “New”. New Mainstages, New players, New Sponsors, and now it looks like New Top Teams. From this series, the necessary level of teamwork required to win is perfectly demonstrated by Impact. The trick that Impact seemed to be so fond of was running in two's instead of the “everymanforhimself” mindset that Final Boss seemed to be engulfed in.
This series may foreshadow the rest of the tournament. For all we know, there could be upsets galore in the near future. All we can say for now is that if Final Boss was overconfident coming into this tournament, they have no reason to be now. However, NEVER count Final Boss out until they are out for good. One loss is not the end of the world, its just not a good beginning.
