The Mental Game

Ever feel like that on some days you're on fire, hitting every shot you take, but on others you just can't hit the broad side of a barn? Well, in a single Halo game, I switch back and forth from these mindsets at least ten times. What really affects my playing more than anything else, is my mental game. A few months ago, I realized that I started to make lists about what "makes me play poorly" on a regular basis. Some items on that list were feeling bloated, listening to music, playing early in the morning, and being angry at a teammate. I tore up this list today. Setting limits on yourself is probably one of the dumbest things you can do as a competitive player. It's the same philosophy of never saying “I can't”. The mind is a powerful thing, if you truly believe you are incapable of doing something, then most likely you wont be able to accomplish it.

Like many other gamers, I have been diagnosed with ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Basically, my mind races between thoughts so quickly that I have a hard time keeping focus on any one item. Unfortunately, Ridilin and other medications caused me to go into a depression as I felt like I was taking everything too serious. I started being mean to friends, and I lost interest in prior hobbies. Eventually I just stopped taking the medication and tried to just go through my academics by slapping myself whenever I feel myself drifting away.

After talking to different pros, both old and new to the circuit, the one piece of advice I found helpful came from P Tizype, the winner of the most recent Bic Flex 4 FFA. P Tizype didn't necessarily say anything different from other pros, but he stated the obvious solution in a succinct manner “Just Focus”. The first thing I thought of was Ogre 2's brilliant advice of “Don't Suck”. The blantantness of the statement irritated me at first. I couldn't figure out why a pro player would offer such simplistic advice. But then I sat back to think about all the implications behind the word 'Focus'. Celebrating after an overkill, is not keeping focus as complaining after a death is not keeping focus. In a way I realized this before I started to really think about it. I play best when I am in “zombie mode”. I just play for the sake of playing and so nothing in the game affects my attitude.

I am truly jealous of the players that are able to separate themselves from the game. The players who are able to not take anything too seriously, the ones that don't care if they get blained by a camper, the ones that just focus on the next life. Hopefully I have taken that first step into the type of player who can control his mental game.

I have that same problem. I focus too much on how I died, or not out shooting someone, or connection issues. I should just play and forget all of that. It's tough to do though lol

Thinking I have to babysit/carry my teammates cripples me in game...I play stupid/stop caring/don't callout...must work on that aspect...

One little thing though...

Really interesting read. But yeh, I agree. Whenever I am just playing to play, I do a lot better than when I'm worried about every little thing. The best thing to do would be to find a balance between caring too much, and not caring at all.

I agree with this haha. My mental game is so shitty online it makes me play terrible. Good thing is my mental game is awesome on LAN :P. Been working on my online mental game for awhile though, still not doing so great with it though.

I used to have a poor mental game, but before Dallas I really tried to grind myself to have a better mentality, not just in Halo, but in everything I do. At Dallas, staying positive in my mind really helped. I talked a ton of trash, not becuase I was trying to get the other team mad or because I'm just a moron(lol), but because it got me and my team pumped. Even when we started losing to The fun Police, I kept my head up and I ended up still going positive while my other teammates didn't do as well. When pros say that Halo is a mental game, they don't mean that you necessarily have to be smart to be good, but that your mindset will really affect your gameplay tremendously.

Hmm, I can totally see your "deeper" thought process to what the word Focus means and how to apply that. I don't struggle with ADHD/ADD but I have a hard time staying focused when something goes awry when it shouldn't have, ie: Lose a DMR battle, miss a snipe, fumble a flag run, miss teammates call outs, get mad at a teammate, etc. However if I were to fix those mental flaws I'm certain the end result would be exponentially better.

Good stuff/read. Mental Awareness here I come...

I'm not a great player by any means but I do play better when I am in the zombie mode you talk about. There are times when I can just focus my concentration on putting the reticule on the opponent and nothing else. It is almost like the reticule is in the foreground and everything else is fuzzy. The game becomes 'get the circle on the man' and my dmr is way better at those times. Any screen lag becomes hugely noticeable and I am just more aware of my shot.

Unfortunately I can't go into this mode nearly as often as I want to.

There is another mode I get into. I can have a few lives that are simply brainless. Periods where I am not thinking at all and generally rushing into any fight I can see. These I would like to minimize.

Further I agree with Itchy & Vox in that I play poorly much when I am bothered by a team mate. I can abide poor play as I'm not the greatest myself but I can't stand complaining about spammers / connection / spawns / bad maps or anything. It drives me crazy and my game suffers. There are a few people on my list that I want to remove because they just drag me down with constant complaints :(

I am typically alright but I am a very emotional player. If we are doing good and I am feeling it then I am on fire and amazing. Sadly though I can get brought down and upset if someone trash talks me specifically or destroys my team.
