View Full Version : Does anyone else feel like Reach just isn't going to be as competitive as H3?

At the moment, I'm loving Reach, the game is so much fun to play, and is a great game altogether. And I know that fixing spawns and gametypes will change the game up a lot, but it really feels like this game won't live up to the fairly consistent, balanced, and fair gameplay that lead to H3 becoming so popular on the circuit. I feel like a lot of the community will lose interest in the game professionally, and it'll turn into something like Call of Duty that is played more for fun than competitively.

You lost me at consistent, balanced, and fair gameplay while describing H3. In all seriousness though I'm reserving all judgement to the competitive merits of the game until MLG releases their variants for the game. I am having more fun with this game than I have had with a Halo game since Halo 2 was out, which is saying a lot considering how god awful the maps on disc are. Hopefully this fun isn't just because of the shiny and new aspect of the game and that I will be able to play this a lot longer than I did H3. Even if Reach loses appeal in the MLG circuit as long as I have fun with the game and can still get games on a regular basis I'll be happy, although I seriously doubt Halo is going to lose any momentum in MLG.

In all honesty, the game has only been out for a couple days and there's nobody who's really 'good' at the game yet. Everybody's learning how to use weapons, how to utilize the AA's and picking new sensitivities and controller settings because Halo 3's coding was all fucked up. Also, there's not many 'good' maps either. By good, I mean competitive. Most of the current maps have no real symmetry and MLG hasn't released a set of v1 rules or weapons.

Until then, we'll just have to wait and see. If you want an opinion, yes. I do think Reach will be as competitive, if not more competitive than Halo 3.

Yeah, I suppose saying H3 was consistent was a little much, but in my opinion the problems with H3 were mostly exaggerated and were usually do more to problems with Xbox Live than with the game itself. In H3, you could generally count on most things happening a consistent way, which is what really allows for strategy and teamwork to work out as well as it does in H3. Too much of this game feels randomized to me. Although, TommyKost could certainly be right in that I'm just not experienced enough with the game yet. There's still a lot to learn, and MLG's changes will hopefully fix everything that I've seen problems with.

those problems that you say are more due to Xbox Live than the game itself, were also extremely prevalent on LAN, and even to some extent on local games (i.e. split-screen 1v1 on the same box)

Reach is a better game than Halo 3.

It will be better than Halo 3, and with MLG settings, it is very likely that it will be better than Halo 2. I already have it equal to Halo 2 (as do many others) just with its default settings.

You sure are Granting a pretty high level to a game that has never played at an event or even has v1 competitive settings. You are entitled to your opinion, but in this case, You...confuse me

Yeah, Impended, I think it's a little bit early to make any sweeping judgments about the quality of MLG Reach. Firstly, it doesn't yet exist. Secondly, it will likely take a few months of grasping for high-level strategy to evolve. Until that point, the game will not play at all like it will with actualized strategy.

Ultimately, I think you'll be right, but at this point we just don't know.

I don't think it's early. I think the default settings (w/out radar) are already more competitive, and definitely more fun, than Halo 3's MLG settings. And it definitely wouldn't surprise me if this game turns out better than H2. Numerous amounts of people have already stated it's better than H2 (but those are mainly the HCE players who didn't like H2 or H3... so I guess they're kind of bias :/)

I'm so pumped for MLG's settings. <3

There is no way I could see this being worse than Halo 3. Worse case scenario: just as successful as Halo 3 on the circuit.

Halo 3 on LAN was a really good and balanced game. I think this game will be more competitive than halo 3 just because of the hitscan weapons. it is a lot harder to hit one shots now due to the single shot so nobody can spray their shots anymore. DMR>BR skill wise.
