View Full Version : Strange problem with internet connection on 360 slim

This is weird. First, let me explain my current setup. I am putting together a LAN, and have 6 stations ready to go. But for right now only 2 are hooked up via ethernet to the internet and are in active use. Both have Astros and they are daisy chained, its a cool setup whenever I have a friend over and we get on multiplayer. One of the XBox's is a new slim, and the other an older unit. Both connected with ethernet. I've wondered about the connection on the slim because, while it doesn't necessarily lag, it seems like I have some shots not register on that unit far more than on the older unit. When you go into the Reach menu for Network status I get the red "danger" warning on the top, whereas the older unit is in the green. I've switched the cables and ports, thinking maybe it was the router or cable, but the status never changes on either. Doesn't matter it one unit is turned on and the other is off, I've tried all variations. The slim always indicates a red status, the older unit indicates green. Thats the constant. I haven't tried wireless yet, but I will when I get home from work. Wondering if anyone else has a new slim 360 who is experiencing a similar condition with theirs.

Checking my slim on Reach now...>_> I hate to say it but it may be your very networking setup...as I don't really lag, nor do I notice many missed shots though I do notice a COUPLE...
Confirmed, the only thing that is red for me is the Upstream Bandwidth, and that's due to only having 3mb/s up.
My NAT is Open, and my Packet Loss is in the Green/Perfect as well.

I have the same problem, but I assumed it was because I followed a tutorial to open my nat on my old box and havent on this one yet

Its most likely that you have a different router setting for one xbox than the other. If this makes sense, use an alternate mac address on your new xbox, and use the mac adress from your old xbox. This way, your new xbox will have the same ip adress/connection as your old one. If it's still red, then idk what's wrong. If its green, then its a router issue.

I have the same problem, even posted a thread about it, but didnt get too many results/answers as in to why it say's
"WARNING" for upstream bandwidth since its the one that matters most.
I have two Xbox's one Slim/Old, and they are both connected to the same router via ethernet.
Its sort of weird because at first the slim one said "AVERAGE" yellowish greenish color, while the old one read
"WARNING"
Next day it automatically switched from "AVERAGE" to "WARNING" on the new slim one, and i did see
some slight registration problems when the host was bad or even when it was good
Just like you, i tried switching ports, running wireless instead of ethernet, but it just wont change. I even got a new dual/band router and contacted my ISP for faster internet but still stays the same and reads "WARNING" for the slim Xbox
Some ppl say its a "glitch" and that it reads "WARNING" for everyone. But their is yet to find a real answer as to why it reads "WARNING" and how to improve it to an "AVERAGE"/"EXCELLENT" status.
What im still yet to try/and recommend you or anyone to try, is running your Xbox on the 5ghz band since its the less crowded. However this might get Pricy, cuz you will need a simultaneously dual band router which supports 5ghz "100-200 bucs" "Microsoft's Wireless adapter {BLACK ONE} 100$$ new", since the internal wifi on the Xbox Slim cant support 5ghz"
Good luck bro, hope this helped.
And if anyone has an answer as in to how to improve it it might help

You can't change a device's MAC address but you can manually assign IP addresses depending on the router but you shouldn't have to do that.
Where did you use the old 360 prior to this setup? If it was on a different network that had a better connection, that may be why you are still seeing the green. That Xbox probably has a better host record, therefore giving it host more often which will make shots register more. If this is the case, give it some time on the new network and it will show red like the new 360.

I've heard of this issue several times. It's more than likely the port forwarding is working for one xbox, but not the other, and only one xbox can use those ports at a time, meaning that they're basically fighting for ports, and the older box is winning because the port forwarding setup in your router, and your newer box has to have it's ports translated by the NAT.
I've heard of several ways to get around this problem, if that is indeed your problem.
Probably the easiest way is to leave your current port forwarding alone, but set your new xbox as a DMZ. This circumvents the NAT translations and should fix your problem.
Aside from that, I've heard of people splitting the port forwarding between boxes. Xbox Live uses TCP ports 80, 3074, and 53 and UDP ports 88, 3074, and 53. People have told me that doing 88 and 3074 to one xbox, and 80 and 53 to the second xbox will allow both xboxes to connect simultaneously without getting the "NAT Warning". I've never done this myself, however.

Good information right here. This should most likely solve your problem if it is a NAT issue.
Is the red box you are getting for the upstream bandwidth or the NAT?

You can't change a device's MAC address but you can manually assign IP addresses depending on the router but you shouldn't have to do that.
yea you can, you can use an alternate mac address, it's in network settings.
you should assign the mac address of your old xbox to the new one, and see if anything changes.
go to advanced settings, it'll say alternate mac address. below that, it says MAC Address:..... copy the old xboxes mac address into the new one's alternate, save settings, turn off the old xbox, and restart the new one.
@phreek, i have 2 xboxes and can't connect them both at the same time using port forwarding, but i'm gonna try that thing you said, i've never heard that b4.
EDIT: it doesn't work. 1 xbox is open (the one with 3074 forwarded) and the other is moderate. oh well, i'll just have to stick to UPnP and shots not registering until i get a better router.

This sounds like a possible solution, will try it tonight :)

First of all, to the forum police ;), sorry for not consolidating all answers in one post. I'm at lunch with limited time and haven't done that before - so I'm just winging it for now.
The router I have is pretty kick ass. Its the Neatgear N600 with simultaneous dual band, gigabit ethernet ports and all that - so if all else fails I will try the 5ghz trick.

I don't have a slim, so I'm not sure if this is the case, but it's worth a shot. On laptops (mine anyway), even if you have it plugged directly into your router, you still have to choose ethernet under the network settings, otherwise it stays wireless.

I'm not 100% certain that the way i explained it was how he actually did it...
perhaps forward 3074 TCP to box #1 and 3074 UDP to box #2 ?
You could still try a combo of port forwarding one box, and set the other box to be a DMZ as well, see how that works.

Ive tried everything. The only way to have both xboxes connected with open nat is with upnp, but i have worse shot registration when i do that. I think my router just sucks. Ive been wanting to get a dlink gaming router for a while, it looks really good.

http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/engenius-wireless-esr9855g-300mbps/4505-3319_7-34102850.html
just sayin.
we run 9850's at work, they're pretty beast. The 9855 just has the packet prioritization for gaming applications. They talk about the wireless randomly dropping but we have upwards of 200 clients sometimes, broken up over 4 AP's, and rarely have issues with wireless stability.

@deluv
Its the same router i have!!
Amazing router that supports 5ghz band!
But remember your gonna need that Microsoft Wireless Antenna since it supports 5ghz
and the Internal Wifi on the Xbox Doesnt.
Let me know how it goes if you do try it.

I'm hooking them both up via ethernet. I actually tried just having one of the Xbox's (older one) hooked up to ethernet and the new one (slim) wireless, to see if there was any difference but there wasn't. I'll look into all the settings and stuff tonight.

I dont want a wireless router, just a wired one, thats why i want the dlink 4100.

First and foremost if the red is in the Upstream portion, then that makes sense...as if you're using one connection for two boxes, your upstream will be split between the two, identically in half...if it's the port forwarding issue, simply assign static IP addresses to your 360's, or put one in a DMZ, one port forwarding...should work.

Last night, out of nowhere, my upstream went up to green "Average" same as the other one. Leaving well enough alone for now. lol
