View Full Version : Forum Awards

Just to be clear this thread isn't for the actual voting, just to see how popular this idea is and to come up with some category ideas. If this sticks voting will occur at the beginning of May, since it is the one year anniversary of the forums.

I've had this idea for a while now, and I was planning on posting it on the 1 year anniversary of the TLN forums which is coming up soon. However; due to the general bad state of the forums of late I was ambivalent on whether or not to actually post it. Then I figured maybe some good old fashioned ego stroking was just what the forums needed in order to be brought to life.

You've probably seen this before on MLG, I think they've had this a couple of times don't lurk there much, or if you've ever been an active part of another forum. When I used to run a guild in WoW we would hold these awards bi-annually to help promote posting on the guild website. It's your basic award set up where you would vote in various categories of forum etiquette.

The purpose of this thread is just to get the idea out there and formulate ideas for award categories if enough of the forums thinks it's a good idea. If this sticks the actual voting on awards could take place next month on the 1 year anniversary. If the admins would create a badge or 2 for some awards that may generate interest. I realize the forums is slowly fading, and I thought this may be a good way to inject some life into it.

tl;dr

Post award categories. Here's some standards.

MVP(Most Valuable Poster)
Post of the year.
Thread of the year.
Most creative member.
Mod of the year.
Funniest forum member.
Most helpful member.
Best stream chat member.
Best Wookiee.

Post comments on the above categories, and post some new ones. If you see someone post a category you like make a comment about it. I'll add the most popular categories to the above list. Also post ideas for voting.

Best Wookie for sure! Anyway, this is a great idea and I think it would evoke a lot of positive feedback, I would love for this to happen. How would voting work though?

Also, how would nominations work? Just a few questions, still love the idea though!

Once concrete categories were decided upon. People would just post in a format like so
Best Wookiee: RagingChickens

Then all of the votes would be tallied up. The voting period would probably need to be about a week or two to give everyone time to think and place their votes.

I see a problem with this /: A voting system like this would be a little bit too public. Voting should be kept completely secret. I know this isn't a major election, but still. Feelings can be hurt and relationships could be broken over this. (I know it sounds ridiculous but it is true!) We should find a better method of voting.

This is actually a really good idea. I'll put in my votes once the kinks get worked out.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head for a secret ballot is Google Moderator. Here's just a test one I made http://goo.gl/mod/WeBR. You would just post a response to each idea. It's not the most user friendly and secure option, but it'll do if we can't find anything else. If anyone has ideas on voting please post them.

I still think posting the votes in here really would be the easiest. Regardless if someone gets offended or not. I mean it's not like anyone is being voted against.

You should do this in like December.. like the yearly forum awards and all that..

I agree with private voting. Otherwise this has the potential to turn ugly lol. I do like the idea, just needs to be worked out very well before done. To be honest, the best way to do this may be to have just the Mods and Admins vote. Having the people vote will probably turn into a popularity contest.

I don't think the point is to try and win yourself. I think it's supposed to be to recognize hardworking members of the community. I wouldn't nominate myself for anything, I don't think that's unfortunate. I simply think others deserve it.

I like the Google Moderator idea, or just any private poll. There is no reason why relationships should be gambled with a fun idea like this. But this idea is wonderful!!

LoL anyway I love the idea of this. I do believe that this would need to be private to avoid people being uneasy for those they vote for. I hope this actually follows through.

My suggestion to you Wookie would be to start messaging mods now and asking them if badges could be made and used. (Especially talk to Joe Fries) Then work out all the kinks such as categories, nominees, and voting. I would be happy to help you out if you want. I think that there are a few categories right now that are a tad unnecessary. But this is still the best idea I have heard on here for a while :)

I messaged Mr P, Peridious, and Joe Fries. Mr P answered and told me that he liked the idea. You should talk to him about getting it put on the carousel and to actually make this like a big thing.

I don't think the voting should be limited to Mod's and admin, just because they have more power dosen't necessarily mean they would be less biased in private voting. I do like the idea of a private vote though, I can see it turning into a public flame war, or people feeling the need to return a vote if a friend voted for them, a simple solution would be to just send your voting forms to a mod or admin who could tally them at the end and post the results.

This was kind of my idea. I thought about PMing a single person to add up all the votes would be the best idea. Using some kind of online voting site could easily be manipulated by someone who really wanted to win.

Do you thinking getting badges for this is realistic at all though D_Moralize? We haven't been able to get badge ideas passed before. I think it would be pretty awesome though.

I could see an admin like Mr. P working for tallying the votes, the only question is if he has the time to sit down and tally them up. It's the final 2 weeks of the semester so I've got all that work I've put off until now to do, so feel free to take this idea and run with it Chickens. I'll check in and help out when I have time.

TBH im not sure, It seems sort of like Joe wants to stay away from user organized things getting badges, and honestly I sort of agree that they should be from official TLN things and maybe for user organized things we can just create cool signatures for the winners like on MLG. Im not 100% that it would be a no, but even if it is I think we could still do this just as long as we make sure it dosent turn into another 80% flaming thread

Yes agreed! We don't need badges! We can just do this anyway. Since Wookie said I have his blessing to carry this forward, I guess I will have to start thinking of nominations. How do you think we would go about this though? It would be difficult to not piss people off.

I dont think we need nominees, just a ballot with the categories and have everyone be a write in, they fill it out and PM it to whoever is doing the tallying

Yea this is how we used to do it on my old guild site in WoW. Except we just posted it in the thread, we were all egomaniacs anyway and that way it created some healthy competition between our memebers .

RagingChickens
04-18-2011, 07:27 PM
Okay so now the question is, who is doing the tallying? We need a trusted, impartial member. Perhaps a mod? An admin would be the best case scenario but that would be hard to make happen.

Yes. Good bump. When I get home today I want to write this whole thing up. But for now, would anybody like to volunteer to be the vote collector? I need someone who is trusted on this site. Any mod or admin would do. Do you want to do it D_Mo? It's up to you.
