View Full Version : My Gears Of War 3 Beta Experience

So today I finally got to play the Gears 3 beta. I'll start off by saying that I am in love. It just felt right going back to the Gears franchise and surprisingly this title was a little more fast paced than the previous. I really think this will help it a lot. The waiting in between rounds really annoyed people in the previous installments. Team Deathmatch really sparks up the tempo and makes the game a blast to jump into.

Weapons:

Lancer- Quick Rate of Fire, Good accuracy, no recoil. Mostly Weak.
Hammerburst- The DMR of Gears. Single Shot, Extremely Accurate, Very Strong. Little to no recoil.
Retro Lancer- Strongest of the ARs. Good Rate of Fire. Kicks like a mule.

When choosing your AR, I think it depends on your situation. Using all 3 for good bits of time, I quickly realized the basic lancer is completely useless. So unless you just wanna run around chainsawing people, drop it. The retro-lancer is a perfect counter to the shotguns. Up close, it's a monster. Medium range, burst firing is partially effective. Long range, forget about it. This is good for CQC and that's about it. Hammerburst. This gun will rule Gears 3 until it is buried along with the franchise. Pinpoint accuracy makes you dangerous from long range. This takes out anyone using a lancer, retro, or shotgun. So unless they have a sniper or diglett, you're set. While playing with a team of 5, we had a perfect setup where we team shot with the hammerburst and it is virtually unstoppable. Sit two guys back laying down fire while others clean up the kills in front. I am absolutely in love with this gun.

Gnasher- Your best friend from the earlier GoW games, nothing's changed
Sawed-Off- Spread is insane, 1hit power, 0 range.

I feel this weapon is a toss up. It's tough to lose when picking a shotgun here. Sawed-off is a great way to whip around and destroy people, but if you get anywhere out of range, you're completely out of luck. Gnasher seems underpowered because of it, but really is quite strong and still something great to use consistently.

Sniper- I feel like it's easier to headshot, but maybe just me
Digger launcher- Coining the nickname "Diglett" right here. Pretty good if in the right hands (I couldn't do jack shit, but my friend raped with it). Prevents camping.
Mulcher- Awesome gun that just mows down people
Mortar- Same as GoW2

Maps- I have a feeling they're going to get overplayed pretty fast, but so far they are very solid.

Thrashball- Fun. Fastpaced. Really nothing else I can say about it. Kinda wish maybe a sniper on it in the concession area, but it's understandable why there's not.

Checkout- Love it, plenty of flanking routes, average sized. Multiple areas for fighting.

Trenches- Only played it once, No feedback yet.

So in conclusion this was me just being really bored and not wanting to do physics homework. I really recommend reserving the game to pick up the beta when it comes out on the 25th for everyone else. I hope that it brings Gears back to the top of the competitive shooter food chain, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for as long as I can that MLG picks this up (doubt it :P).

Feedback appreciated, lemme know how you guys like the beta. Since this is the game that will be running my life come September, hit me up on the beta if you wanna game at all until then at---> iF cLuTcH.

Agreed.

The Lancer isn't weak at all. When using an active reload it's pretty strong. It's good for long, medium combat and when someone is running at you.

The Hammerburst is very overpowered If you tap the trigger it's a Jesus gun. There is a small amount of recoil, not much at all really.

The Retro Lancer is very overpowered as well. it's a CQC weapon and nothing more because, of the spread and recoil of the weapon.

The Lancer isn't any where near useless. If the gun was useless it would shoot blanks. The only time the Retro Lancer is a counter is when you're playing with people who don't use cover correctly. The Gnasher/Sawed-off, mixed with cover/wall bouncing will dominate anyone using a Retro Lancer, mainly because of the spread. I can agree with the Hammerburst. This weapon in the right hands is nothing but a sniper. If you can pace your shots depending on range and cover, it's near unstoppable.

Gnasher- Your best friend from the earlier GoW games, nothing's changed
Sawed-Off- Spread is insane, 1hit power, 0 range.

The way the Gnasher is reminds me heavily of Gears of War 1. The only thing I see wrong with it, is at this given point in time, is that it's slightly random at times. It could be the lack of dedicated servers, but we will see when they come out here soon.

The Sawed-off, is a CQC rape train. No matter what, nine times out of ten, you're going to explode into a bloody mess. This is a very OP weapon. If MLG picks up GoW3, I don't see this even being considered.

I'm going to have to disagree on the whole "toss up" idea. The only time I see the Sawed-off remotely popping up in my mind, is when I have no more spawns left, or I switch it with my Hammerburst. (Only because I am out of ammo)

In Gears of War 1, I normally used the Longshot, because I could hit either the head, or be cheap and two active them. In this game, the active doesn't down them. I don't think that is a good choice. I mean, it's a sniper. In all games, the sniper is one of, if not, the strongest weapon. Look at CS. AWP is a one shot.

The Grave Digger is am amazing gun. I used to watch GoW MLG and on Canals they would just camp. I see this gun destroying setups, campers, and being an all around good weapon. When placed in the hands of the right person, this gun is better than the Boomshot, Longshot, or even the Torque bow.

The Mulcher is a good weapon on Thrashball, due to the symmetricalness of the map. It's placed on the map, to where it can take over a game easily. It's fast, and deals a great amount of damage. It, however, isn't as good on the other maps, due to the LOS blockers.

The Mortar is a great weapon, in my opinion. My first time using it, I got a 4for1. I think if you can determine how to angle is, and where to stop the bar, it's an amazing weapon.

Maps- I have a feeling they're going to get overplayed pretty fast, but so far they are very solid.

Quiet possibly. I do think at a certain point, yes. But, it happens to almost all maps in T/FPS shooters. I'm sure Epic Games will come out with better maps soon.

I don't know if it's just me but, Thrashball reminds me of Construct from H3. Mainly due to the fact, if you hold down top, it's hard to get out killed. It has a power weapon respawning quiet quickly. The gameplay is always fast paced, and it's really fun.

I can agree with Checkout.

Trenches is a solid map. Not much I can say about it.

The game is better than any T/FPS, I've played to date. Also, your education is more important than Gears3 feedback. :p

I may message you for some late night, Gears 3 beta gaming. MKB MrKillBoy

I would quote your whole section MKB, but really that would take up a ton of space. I wasn't too sure where to post it and when I looked through the sections, I must of overlooked it, but definitely hit my up sometime today to play. I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

As for stuff we may disagree on, that's the beauty of America and it was what this whole thread was supposed to be about. I want to see what every one else has to say, so keep these posts like MKBs coming.

Thanks for this post. I was a huge Gears1 fan but havent been thrilled with it since the original, the new one sounds promising.

Good read, since I'll have to wait til the game actually releases its cool to see what the community thinks of it so far.

This is by far the best multiplayer experience in the series so far. The fact its only the Beta is very promising. I think its shaping to be one of the better shooters Xbox has to offer and hopefully MLG will give it a fair chance at being on the circuit next year. I find none of the guns are over-powered at all. They all have their pros and cons in certain situations. I got to extensively play all maps and gametypes this weekend. They were all amazing except for Trenches; My team every game got the other team in a spawn trap and it took the fun out of it. It sucks that the Bulletstorm users have to wait 2 weeks before all maps and gametype's are released to try them.

Edit: If anyone wants to play the beta hit me up with a friend request or message.

I've not stopped playing Gears3Beta. I logged 11 hours the first day. I had to take a break from the 11 hours a day, but i just hit 100 matches. About to get on and play. MKB MrKillBoy
