I'm glad I have an xbox 360.

Sony Corp. said hackers had obtained personal data, and possibly credit card information, of tens of millions of people who have registered for PlayStation Network, the company's online game and movie service, as well as Qriocity, its on-demand digital music service.

"This was a big one," said Bruce Schneier, security technologist and author of "Beyond Fear" and other books on computer security, referring to the number of accounts and the scope of information involved.

As of March 31, Sony had 77 million accounts for its PlayStation Network service, which links users via the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console to download games and tap into online services such as Netflix's video streaming service.

Not all accounts are active, and it's possible that one person can have multiple accounts.

Hackers who gained access to personal information last week were able to steal names, addresses, phone numbers, user names, birth dates, email addresses and passwords, Sony said. The company said it did not know whether credit card information was stolen.

"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," Sony PlayStation spokesman Patrick Seybold wrote on the company's blog. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

Sony last week shut down its PlayStation Network service, saying it had been the target of an "intrusion," but did not release details until Tuesday.

The delay drew criticism from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who fired off a letter to the president of Sony's PlayStation business in the U.S., Jack Tretton, saying he was "troubled by the failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections."

"We learned there was an intrusion April 19 and subsequently shut the services down," Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said. "We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until [Monday] to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly [Tuesday]."

Schneier said such attacks aren't unusual and that few consumers are permanently damaged from any resulting identity theft.

"This happens a lot, and there's nothing you can do about it," Schneier said. "You might be screwed, but you'll basically be OK."

Meanwhile, Sony said it plans to get parts of its PlayStation Network back up "within a week."

In 2009 I was hacked as well. The hacker managed to buy over 150 dollars worth of media, games, and music from my personal credit card. When I addressed Sony about it, they had told me to contact my credit card company and to file a report with them. I was given the run around for about a MONTH. I then just canceled my credit card and would be the last time I ever had any credit card information with Sony.

Later on, they said that I would be able to down load all the things charged on my account since it had been purchased any ways. How was this justice? Why would I want to down load files that I had no interest in, and was not given the privilege to choose my own. Sony has one of the weakest firewalls and I would NEVER recommend it to any one else. Stick to XBOX live. At least their customer service is willing to listen to their consumers.

From what I read the motivation for the hack is retaliation for Sony's treatment of playstation hacker GeoHot. They are currently throwing the book at him in multple countries because of his work on the playstation to open it up to homebrew.

I personally think that there is no hacker and that the PS3 servers just crashed and they are trying to cover it up. But who knows...it sucks either way.

Who's to blame here, Sony! It is their responsibility to ensure their customers security is of utmost importance.

Had they of realized, they would of reaccessed their security infrastructure at the first sign of danger. Although money thats received through PSN + may not solely go towards customer security, a vast majority should. So don't feel sorry for Sony, had their hands not of been so greedy they may of been able to avoid this.

You should go over to GeoHot's Channel and check out the moronic comments on there.

Heres a great one:

Dude, I'll admit, you re a fucking beast ass hacker, and you know why not use the skill if you got it? Was it even you who left the bank accounts open like that? I dont know the whole story so dont get mad, but i didnt think jailbreaking a ps3 would do that. Its obviously not you who left bank accounts open to be stolen from, thats the people that hacked sony, this "Anonymous" group. Correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure i got this right...

I'm very sorry I read that and struggled to make sense of it. Bottom line is that running a multiplayer service is serious business. As much as we dislike MS for everything they suck at they are good at enterprise server security / reliability.

My favorite part about this is all of the people who say "HA YOU PAY $60 FOR XBL A YEAR! PSN IS FREE" I guess you get what you pay for...

You're telling me. I was curious as to why the person thought bank accounts have a similarity to doors/windows.

"who left the bank accounts open like that?", I can only assume what he would say next is; close those bank accounts, its getting chilly.

Geohot settled with Sony last week so while that might've been the original motivation, it's not an ongoing issue.

The main problem here is the fact that the "private" developer-only part of the PSN and the consumer PSN are/were served by the same back-end systems. Access to the developer PSN was achieved by exploiting a bug in a recent PS3 firmware update and when combined by Sony's failure to implement even basic protection for stored customer data meant that what should've been a relatively minor incident very quickly became a worst-case scenario. I bet even the hacker(s) involved were surprised when they realised they'd just compromised the entire PSN.

It's a shame Sony can't be prosecuted for the data loss directly due to laws designed to protect e-commerce but if corporate negligence can be proven (which shouldn't be too difficult) it's game on (pun intended!)

This is what sony said:

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information.

You guys don't that take shit seriously man this has happen before. Plus what do the pro feel they cant practice lol you guys need help

556i guess this weekend xbox will be offering the 4gig system at a much lower price to further drive a wedge into the playstation. I really think Playstation is to blame for this crap i mean you can build a super computer with dasiy chaning six of them together what did they think was going to happen with their subpar security and shitty online system
