The House, The Boys, The Experience. ..My long overdue Thank you to Mr. P, TLN, and the Pros we all envy so much.
For those of you who do not know I just spent last weekend at the gaming house attending PvJs #3. My first real peek into this community Ive slowly been following since H2. (It really wasnt Pros v Joes It was Pros v Pros and this sad excuse for a Halo player named Morty). Im being serious, all the players in attendance have ridiculous amounts of talent when it comes to this game and it was my sincere pleasure to learn has much as I could from each and every one of them. My hats off!!
When I landed in Chicago FiS was kind enough to pick me up from the airport and drive me to the house; stopping along the way to by an old man a hot dog (me) with fake money ;) and tell me about how he got started playing Halo. Needless to say I was a sponge. I love the personal history that goes unspoken behind this sport. When I arrived and set my bag down in the entry way of the gaming house I was suddenly transported back to my college days and a frat house I party at a little too much (only this one was clean!!) I first met Totz, who literally makes you feel like his best friend from the moment you meet him and Bert, who I was slowly finding out loves the cinnamon rolls! (Morty: Wheres Tom? Totz: What, you dont hear that? ) There were signed shirts in glass casings all over the walls (see picture of the original God Squad) and massive checks for $100,000 made out to Halo 3 world champions in the dining room and upstairs. And I hadnt even been to the basement yet!
Ahhh, the basement A gamers idea of what heaven may look like. When you stand on the landing looking down all you can see are hand painted pro teams symbols lining the walls; FB, TD, Instinct, SQ, Str8 Rippin, etc. You are then greeted by a comfy leather sofa, fridge, snack bar, 500 cases of NOS, two flat screens that stream gaming, an arcade with any game you can think of (Donkey Kong..get some), and more memorabilia then you can shake a stick at! Then you turn the corner 16 monitors, 16 boxes, 16 Astros connections, comfy chairs, the works! Really the only thing missing were the San Diego Charger girls to feed me grapes and shout words of encouragement!
My first night I had the honor of playing some doubles with T2 (sorry everyone who had to play against us but yes, Tom really is that Fing GOOD!) Then I watched FiS practice and stayed up till 4am talking with Strongside; how cool is this guy! (And you think its not worth the price of admission.?). I slept on the basement sofa and moved camera 2; no threads about this random sleeping!
I awoke to footfalls coming down the stairs and bags being thrown into a closet. The Joes are arriving. I met Perilous (DUCK BUTTER!!), Typical (sup Ben!) And American Psycho ( Flankem Paul) first. Just so I dont make a thread any longer (yeah I know its long enough), everyone arrives. We all hook up, the pros walked around and evaluated skill sets and we were all placed on a team. (ohhh, somewhere during that time I had the distinct pleasure of getting my ass handed to me by Khaotik Snipe and EvaduR but your mind tends to block out really bad memories!) I was placed on Team Totz along with Khaotik Snipe and The Outlaw. Our first match was against Team T2 and we only took 2 games in the series. I told you these guys were good! Mrs. P and Mrs. P (yep, there are two of them!) cooked us an amazing dinner and we got back to gaming. Thanks for the cookies ladies and the 5 pounds I put on eating them! :)
Seriously, eating goes fast there because all you can think about is getting back downstairs. Not to mention a couple of NBA games that happen to be going on but thats just a side note.
Enter stage right, Mr. P: Heres the thing about Mr. P, when he walks into a room, you know it. Some people just have that presence about them. And believe me when I tell you this, the man does not stop moving! The Godfather is everywhere! Fixing this, updating that, (Cass and Kyle Ill get to you guys), adjust this, pick up that bottle, move Johns spit can, Mr. P, I need this, Mr. P, I need that And poof, like a magician, it falls out of the sky into his hands; problem solved. Ohh, and did I fail to mention TLN is just his hobby! I cannot begin to say enough. The man is off the charts! We should all strive to accomplish half of what this guy does in a day! My words do not do justice. Mr. P, this community owes you so much we could begin to start paying you now but will never make the cut-off date
(shhhh, Dec. 21, 2012 its all over boysJ/K) Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Day 2 fades into Day 3. I awake somewhere on an upstairs floor. Jesus, is that VicX snoring!? Back to the basement we go. Flameswords team is ripping faces. T2s screaming at the top of his lungs. Lets F***ing GO! was the phrase of the weekend (yeah, I even yelled it that one time I sniped someone). Strongside; calm, cool, collected, VicX, a foot away from the monitor, Do you know how fast FiS eyes move from monitor to monitor? Totz fingers fly over the buttons in a rapid choreographed dance! Even when their no shields theyve got shields! This is a whole other level of play. XBL is tee ball; this is pitching against Albert Pujols when the cardinals have 2 on, youre up by one, its the bottom of the ninth, and the count is full! PvJs is a living breathing machine. DaCassidy Kid and Kyle were constantly working their asses off as mods bringing TLN the live stream behind the boxes. Damn, who even won this event!
Final Day, its down to the wire. Team Flamesword (Ultima, American Psycho, Borracho) vs. Team FiS (Malfunction, warLAKisbreakin, and Strafe) battled it out for the championship with Flameswords team emerging victorious. Looks like Mike brought a little of that Dallas championship magic with him to PvJ. (Funny, every time I see Mike I think back to an H3 match on Construct where he was sneaking up behind a player prepin the back smack while the camera shows him laughing prior to the execution!)
And just like thatit was over. But wait, whats this I hear? Everyone, man your consoles. Time for 8 v 8 Zealotno wait, What? Flying golf ballsZombiesWarthogs & Mongooses lets go fasttwo guys running over the rest of us on bloodglutch trying to cap a flagINDIANA MF JONES!!! Ha, Ha. Strongside, do you practice those game types bro!? Cass gets a head shot, nope, (CASS after dropping his controller on the ground: Morty, did you see that? I hate this game.) Most of us did not sleep the last night.
Its absolutely amazing how fast 4 days went by. The experience is one I wish everyone could enjoy! But Hey, I hear Mr. Ps going to hold some more of these! To Mrs. P, thanks for the amazing food and taking an entire day of your life shuttling us to the airport!
My sincerest thanks go out to all my fellow Joes (pros) for an unforgettable weekend! You guys without a doubt made me a little bit younger and for that Im eternally grateful! This ones for you: Khaotik Snipe (already a pro), Outlaw, Ultima, Typical, KGBHero, EvaduR, American Psycho, Malfunction, Asta, Strafe, Perilous, warLAKisBreakin, Evolution, UR Adopted, Buggas, Evolved QS, and Borracho! You guys ROCK!
To the Pros, without your hard work and dedication to a game we love so much we wouldnt be here! Totz (my man), Strongside, Flamesword, FiS, VicX, and T2 (doubles anytime brother). Quick shout out to Ninja and Shelly, thanks for the matchmaking. I wish you all the best of luck this year and the best of luck wherever your future endeavors my take you. See you all in Anaheim!
And Ill see the rest of you in those two little places we all call home; TLN and XBLs matchmaking lobby!
