Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew what goes into the division placings in Reach. Yesterday I was Onyx and my friend was gold. We played like 10 games together and won like 7 or 8 of them. Then today i wake up, he's Onyx, and I'm gold. What gives? my overall stats are wayyyy better than his, I have a higher K/D, and my winning percentage is 63%, whereas his is only 55%. Is bungie retarded, or is it something else that goes into these ratings?

You can find the rating formula on bungie.net, I'm trying to find the link but I can't seem to at the moment. Just go to there site and try to search for it and the spell it all out for you on exactly how it works

Basically, it uses Trueskill to figure out what ranking you belong in. However, instead of the winning team all gaining exp., the people with the top 4 ratings (random 4 digit number which is terribly implemented...), get the exp. So, for example, if you get a rating of 1400 in a game, but your three teammates have over 1450, and someone on the other team has a rating of 1425, it wouldn't count in the Trueskill formula.

So, in other words, the rating doesn't mean a whole lot, and winning doesn't matter at all (aside from the .04 rating penalty for the losing team), all that matters is that you're in the top 4 each game.

oh, wow, so in other words, Reach's rating system is complete BS. I just don't see why i would drop from onyx when i actually increased my overall stats yesterday. this system is really stupid.

I hope that they use a number-skill system like halo 3 for the MLG playlist

Well if I remember correctly the onyx division bungie stated is the top 5% of players in the arena. So even if you did increase your stats from the previous day, if others also increased their stats to kick you out of the top 5% then you wouldn't have an onyx rating anymore. This was stated in one of their weekly updates.

Another reason you can drop from onyx is because only the top 5 percent of rated arena players can obtain it and it constantly changes.

I just read that rating system...and that is easily the stupidest thing bungie has ever implemented into one of their games...they are trying to increase teamwork by what? making it better for a player to be selfish than to actually work with his/her team? i actually have seen a thread where a person explains how to increase your rating, and 75% of it is how to screw over your teammates so you can come out ahead of them...i'm sorry, if the rating system doesn't change, i can't play reach...because the top 5% is going to be mostly comprised of the most selfish players on bnet...*slowly applauds bungie*

Isn't that what a majority of players asked for though from Halo 3? I mean everyone complained "Oh my teammates sucked I wish my rank was just based off me." "I hate this whole number system. It's stupid just cause everyone cheats to get their fifties and the rest of us that work for it get left out to dry." It is kinda a "be careful what you ask for, cause you just might get it" situation.

Personally I like the idea of arena because it removes the number system. I hated people basing skill off rank.

In my opinion, the system they put in place would have worked great to condone teamwork if the assist system worked better. Rewarding players for getting assists would do a good job of keeping players looking to reach some cool rank from stat whoring to do it, but with the assist system they have it feels like playing selflessly doesn't reward you at all.

I agree! but it would help a lot if the assists were the same as in halo 3. right now it's way too hard to get an assist, so if you have the lowest number of kills on your team and you should have gotten 15 assists but the dumb game only gave you 3, you're screwed.

I do like that this new system defeats the purpose of boosting/deranking, but i did like the halo 3 system better. it felt so good to get a 50.

Just to let you know the MLG playlist will have no rank whatsoever it is strictly a social playlist in Reach
