Hi all,

I need your help once again. After a couple of hours of research I found the microphone I want to use for XBOX360/PC gaming/voice recording. I saw the MLG commentators with the Sennheiser headphones I think? If you look at Shockwave and Ghandi they are always wearing those broadcasting headphones. With a little research I am not 100% sure but I think they are the Sennheiser HMD 280.

My question is, can anyone confirm this as I was watching the rebroacast of Columbus and on the end of the microphone they had a sponge or a 'condenser' so I wasn't sure if it was the right model. Can anyway back this up or give some insight on what they use and the voice is so clear and no background noise at all.

I would honestly appreciate it.

That "sponge" you are talking about isn't a condenser. A condenser basically evens out the volume of the input for the mic, so that nothing is too loud or too soft. That spongy thing at the end is called a "pop filter". That stops plosives(the puff of air that comes out of your mouth when you make "p" sounds) from going into the mic. You can buy these online, so don't think it is a special feature that comes with a specific headset.

As for the headset, it looks pretty solid. Good frequency range, the impedance doesn't matter since it has a high power source. I'm not sure if this headset is what you want though. This headset is made for high noise environments, and speaking over it. That's why it is used by commentators, not players. But its all up to you.

Thanks for the reply. What microphone would you recommend? I am not to bothered about the sound quality I just want a really good microphone and the MLG cast always seems so clean and crisp. Any input would help, thanks for taking the time to reply.

okay first off you got the pop filter or screen which ever you wanna call it correct but where in the hell did you get your info on what a condesor mic is??? when someone talks about a condensor or capactior mic its refering to the fact that you need a low about of voltage (48v) to move the diaphram in the mic. there are two types of mics that are widely used dynamic ie sure sm 58, 57 and others along that line or a condensor mic can be any mic that needs voltage to run has a wider dyaphram or small really depends what you want but they do offer the best for vocals ribbon mics as well but there very very touchy and unless stated do not require phantom power. as for when MLG shout cast there most likely using a conpressor on the other end of those mics with helps lower the volume clean up the singnal and re amplifies the output of that said signal ( i can't say for sure since i haven't see the set up ) But if your looking to do after the fact as in play capture add commentary then post you can do that with just a mic pro tool logic or even audacity (this one is free or at least it was ) then what you would do is basically use a compressor to create a ducking effect so you have low level of audio behind your voice and once you stop talking the audio gains go back up so there is alot of ways that you can do it but the senhizer headphones are really do i have worked with a few in live sound and love the feel and quality

I'm pretty sure Brimstone is mixing up the terms compressor and condenser. I'm calling it a finger fart because he knows his stuff.
