Since MLG is revisiting the ‘top eight goes to nationals’ scheme, I thought it would be fun to compare with the two Halo 3 events that used this method. This will allow us to fully see how much the game has changes since 2008. First let’s look at the 2008 top 8 with some top teams that competed for that 8 spot.

TOP 8

1. Str8 Rippin - Tsquared, Snip3down, Elamite, Legit
2. Triggers Down - SK, FearItself, Hysteria, Karma
3. Final Boss - OGRE1 , OGRE2, NEIGHBOR, StrongSide
4. Instinct - Roy, Lunchbox, Walshy, Soviet
5. Team Classic - Mackeo , Ant , Soldier187, Victory
6. Ambush - Heinz, Nexus , iGotUrPistola, Cloud
7. Carbon - Shockwav3 , GH057Ayame, Naded, Cpt Anarchy
8. LeGendZ - Defy, Ghandi , BesT MaN, Legend Pimps

Contending Teams

AntiGravity - Severince, Tizoxic , Eli, Gun Shot
Breaking Point - Chig, PowWow, MudVayne, Ace
Under The Influence - TalenT, TwYLighT, LiL SeB, Str8Pimp
Impulse - CallMeGod, Wooly, BatMayne, InTheClutch
XiT WoundZ - Luck, Samurai, Bonfire, InSaiyan

Green = Active Player who made 2008 nationals but did not make 2010 nationals
Red = Retired Player
Brown = Active player who did not make 2008 nationals but who made 2010 nationals

Dallas was a very exciting event leading up to the national championships. The method of how the top 8 that would get invites was much different than the most recent Washing D.C event. Using the points system, the top 7 already had their invite to the National Championships. The recent Washing D.C event did it much differently. They just used the point system to find the top 8 teams. Only three teams (Instinct, Final Boss and Status Quo) getting their invites prior to the event because of their impressive showings in the previous events.

This really opened the door for teams to step up their game. They knew that if they did not show up in D.C they would not be moving on to the National Championships. Even Triggers down could have missed their chance if they didn’t win a series and 5 other teams surpassed them in points.

Before getting into more information, let me show you the 2010 top 8 along with the contending teams.

TOP 8

1. Final Boss – OG2, Victory X, FearItself, Pistola
2. Instinct – Roy, Lunchbox, Cloud, Elamite
3. Triggers Down – Hysteria, Neighbor, ToTz, Best Man
4. Status Quo – FlameSword, Ace, eNable, Assault
5. Dynasty – APG, Destin, Clutch, Heinz
6. Believe the Hype – Demon D, ManiiaC, Snipedown, Tizoxic
7. Warriors – BRAKE, NK, Robbie B, Snake Bite
8. Carbon – Walshy, SK, Chig, Soldier187

Contenting Teams

Str8 Rippin – T2, Naded, Gh057Ayame, Defy
Darkest Hour – TwYLighT, RyaNoob, G00FY, Batmayne
Heaven and Earth – StrongSide, Cpt Anarchy, Sypher, Dersky
Purgatory – KillerDrew, Karma, MimiC, Gilkey

Blue = New player in the 2010 national championships invites (based on contention and top 8 of 2008 )
*

Now when you look at these leader boards, you instantly see Str8 Rippin not making the top 8 to nationals. You also see Darkest Hour, who placed 4th place in Washing D.C and played amazingly well, did not make nationals. You see Karma, StrongSide, KillerDrew and Cpt Anarchy not making nationals. You can’t help but think what the top 8 would be if they used the 2008 rules. In the 7th place spot would have been Str8 Rippin, since they were in that position going into the event. The 8th place spot would have either gone to Darkest Hour or Warriors, but it’s impossible to know which team would have gotten it for sure. If we compare the paths to DH 4th place finish and Warriors 5th place finish you will see why.

Warriors – Beat Carbon, Purgatory, Heaven and Earth. Lost to Final Boss.

Darkest Hour – Beat C5, sQ, Instinct. Lost to Final Boss.

Warriors beat more bubble teams while DH beat more teams that already had invites to the Nationals. To say Instinct and sQ were not playing 100% is a fair statement. They were not playing for their invite whereas DH was, but they are still top teams. When you look at Warriors, they faced off against more teams that were playing for their invite. All the teams that Warriors faced were playing at 100% since they knew if they didn’t, they wouldn’t get their National Championship invitation.
Leading into the National Championships, here are some Fun Facts for you guys to know. Some are obvious to you, some you may not know about.

Fun Facts

- Triggers Down has won the last two Dallas Events
- Triggers Down has not placed Top 4 at a National Championship.
- OGRE2, Walshy and OGRE 1 have the most National Championship wins, although, OGRE 2 has the most tournament wins.
- GH057Ayame, who is not going to be a part of this National Championship, has placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd in National Championships since 2006
- Walshy had always placed top 3 in the National Championships.
- In H3, Neighbor and OGRE2 have placed lower than his teams ranking.
- Roy and Lunchbox are the only duo to stay together from 2008 – 2010.
- Carbon has placed top 3 in every national championship since 2006.
- In 2009, tD placed top 3 every event until the national championships, where they placed 5th. Only team in - 2010 to place top 3 is Final Boss.

Thanks for reading. I thought it would be fun to compare the 2008 top 8 and 2010 top 8. You don't realize how much everything has changed until you see something like this. I added a lot of extra content just because it was on my mind at the time :P

Green = Active Player who made 2008 nationals but did not make 2010 nationals
Red = Retired Player
Brown = Active player who did not make 2010 nationals but who made 2008 nationals

How are green and brown any different from each other? I'm a bit confused.
